Husband Pulls Saybrook Earthquake Survivor from Haitian Rubble

Old Saybrook native Jillian Thorp, 23, was pulled to safety from the earthquake-leveled Haitian Ministries Mission House at 3 a.m this morning by her husband, Frank Thorp, 25. Jillian Thorp's parents Clay and Karen Cook said that Frank Thorp, after driving eight straight hours across the devastated island to reach her following a brief cell phone call telling him she was trapped, dug through the rubble with his bare hands to free her. The Cooks said that Jillian is now in the American consulate and reported to be "OK". Her co-worker Dietsch was more seriously injured and the cook at the Mission House is reported to have lost limbs after being buried in the Mission House's lowest level under tons of wreckage.

Jillian had been working in Haiti as the acting director of the Haitian Ministries Mission House. The Cooks hope to soon re-unite with Jillian who is committed to stay in Haiti and help the devastated island and its people recover from this disaster.

Emily Smack, executive director of the Norwich Mission House in Haiti, said that what is most needed now to help the Haitian people is money to buy food, medicine and provide shelter.
