In Conversation
On Sunday, Nov. 24, at 5 p.m., Breakwater Books, 81 Whitfield Street, Guilford, hosts shoreline author-artist Marika Kuzma in conversation with GreenStage Guilford's Peter Hawes about her recently published, groundbreaking book on Ukraine's deeply rooted culture of choral singing.
Titled Carols of Birds, Bells and Sacred Hymns: An Anthology and Cultural Companion, the book is a collection of holiday carols that also describes Ukrainian history and ancient rituals as they relate to this music. Did you know that the famous carol that we hear every year "Carol of the Bells" (yes, it's Ukrainian!) in its original version is about gratitude for the bounty of the earth? Did you know that its composer was a political activist and that these carols were used to keep the Ukrainian language and identity alive? The stories behind each carol and each composer are colorful, gripping, and inspiring.
The book is already resonating with both musicians and historians. Grammy award-winning conductor Craig Hella Johnson writes: "Kuzma's thorough scholarship and deep affection for the traditions and people it represents shine through...these carols and hymn settings embody an inner soulfulness that deeply moved me."
Historian Serhii Plokhy, author of the New York Times best-seller The Gates of Europe calls it "a unique book that one can not only read but also sing."
Marika directed choirs for some 30 years on the West Coast before moving back to her home state and continues to guest direct choirs. She recently prepared choirs for concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Last year, she led a workshop as part of the GreenStage Guilford Festival, leading the audience in some vocalizing and a Ukrainian carol. She will be sharing her thoughts and some of the stories behind the carols, and playing a few preview tracks from her upcoming recording.
