Amicizia: The Long Arc
The exhibition, Amicizia: The Long Arc, featuring the work of artists Jennifer Davies and Liz Hawkes deNiord, will take place at City Gallery, 994 State Street, New Haven, from Friday, May 31 to June 30, with an opening reception on Sunday, June 2, from 1 to 4 p.m., and an artists’ talk on Sunday, June 30 from 2 to 3 p.m.
Amicizia means friendship in Italian. Davies’ and Hawkes deNiord’s friendship and art-making has spanned more than 50 years. This exhibit, which includes fiber art and paintings, is their first show together. Davies will be showing a collection of sewn collages made from handmade paper, as well as lace-like pieces of hand-sewn Kozo fiber. Hawkes deNiord’s distinct ‘excavated’ paintings are heavily textured, thickly layered, and scraped with palette knife to reveal pentimentos infused with saturated, iridescent light. Working mostly on large canvases, the vertical alignment of her colorful abstract paintings resonates as a physical presence.
