FELT: Fiber Transformed

GAC Exhibition Features Contemporary Felted Art Works

Guilford Art Center (GAC) has launched an exhibition of contemporary fiber artworks created from felt, to be on view through Sunday, April 16, at the gallery at 411 Church Street, Guilford.

FELT: Fiber Transformed will include works by 20 artists who explore this tactile medium to create a wide range of diverse artworks. FELT: Fiber Transformed is held in partnership with Fiber Art Now, a quarterly magazine that also creates exhibitions for print and gallery venues. The print version of the exhibition appeared in the summer 2022 issue of the magazine, selections of which are on view at GAC.

The exhibition was juried by Jane Dunnewold, an internationally recognized teacher and lecturer in the fiber arts. She has exhibited her work throughout the world, and she is the recipient of numerous awards. In 2020, her archives were acquired by the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Works in the exhibition include felted sculptures, wall-hung objects, and wearable items. In juror Dunnewold’s words, the selections “represent works that are technically accomplished in the use of felt or felting, exhibiting seamless relationships between color, materials, and form.” She also notes that many of the images and themes portray the artists’ passions—nature, social justice/commentary, or humor—and that “mastery of technique is valuable, but using…skills to express a vision is invaluable.”

The GAC gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is free and open to the community. For more information, contact Guilford Art Center at www.guilfordartcenter.org or 203-453-5947.
