Orchids 101: Demystifying the World's Most Fascinating Plants
Orchids capture the imagination, yet seem to intimidate most growers - unfairly! The Essex Library and Hotchkiss Library of Sharon will host orchid expert Tyson Triplett for a virtual lecture on Saturday, March 11, at 4 p.m. that will explain the basics of orchids, how to grow them, and give resources that can enable you to better understand their needs in order to grow and rebloom your plants. This event is part two of the libraries’ Winter Gardening Series.
Ty Triplett is a Landscape Architect based out of Essex. As a child, his love of vegetable gardening led him to orchids. He has been growing, exhibiting, and killing orchids for over 25 years. He is an accredited judge with the American Orchid Society, has served as the co-chair for orchid entries at the Philadelphia Flower Show, Membership Committee of the American Orchid Society, and has been the orchid grower and curator for Rutgers University’s orchid collection. He has received numerous cultural and flower quality awards from the American Orchid Society, the Medal for Horticulture from the National Garden Club, and his childhood dream of Best Orchid in Show at the Philadelphia Flower Show. He has grown on windowsills, under lights, and in greenhouses. He hopes to share some of the lessons he wishes he had known when he began growing the world’s most incredible family of plants.
This Zoom talk is free and open to the public; registration is required. For more information or to register, call the Essex Library at 860-767-1560 or vist youressexlibrary.org.
