Four Question Areas

Even though the vigil to discuss the former piano factory in Ivoryton was canceled, people have responded with their ideas. Their feedback falls into four question areas:

(1) What physical and emotional dangers does a deteriorating building in the midst of a community pose to the residents? Should the Town conduct a survey of the residents of Ivoryton to ascertain how they feel and go about their business in the presence of such an eyesore?

(2) Ivory was bleached with chemicals during the factory production process. Have the factory and grounds, as well as the surrounding area, been tested for toxicity and pollution?

(3) This past year, debris in front of the building was transported to an area that had been cleared of trees and hollowed out behind the building and next to the Falls River. Other than hiding debris, killing sustaining vegetation, and possibly endangering water resources, what was achieved?

(4) If the factory complex were located in one of the other villages, would the Town have given its appearance and condition more attention by now?

In the interest of finding answers to these questions, maybe they could be brought up at the next Plan of Conservation and Development meeting at the Essex Town Hall on Thursday, Jan. 9.
