All We Need to Know

I’ve recently moved back to my beloved hometown of Old Saybrook, and I’m excited to vote as a new resident of District 23. As I get acquainted with local issues and candidates running for district representative, I’m trying to reconcile Republican incumbent Devin Carney’s image and his Trump-inflected voting record. It doesn’t add up.

He claims to be “moderate” or “bipartisan,” but Mr. Carney voted against the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act, the Connecticut Clean Air Act, and critical legislation that incentivizes the use of environmentally friendly policies and develops plans for a cleaner economy.

This voting record reveals an implicit Trump alliance. I looked for instances where Mr. Carney might have condemned the leader of his party or objected to the former president’s many controversial policies. None could be found.

Why has Mr. Carney never once publicly denounced Trump’s blatantly racist behavior and sexual violence towards women? What does he think of the proposed tariffs no respected economist can support?

There’s a lawn sign popping up around town that says “Old Saybrook is Trump Country.” I’ve seen it next to a Devin Carney sign. This tells me plenty about him as a candidate. But I want Mr. Carney to tell us directly if he is supporting Trump/Vance. Why be silent about the most consequential election in our lifetime?

When you’re trying to earn my vote, it all comes down to trust. So, I’m voting for Democrat Jane Wisialowski. She supports reproductive freedom, protecting our coastlines from the devastation of climate change, and protecting our children from gun violence.

That means Jane Wisialowski is a true representative for all of us. And in contrast to Mr. Carney, she will tell you, without hesitation, she is voting for Harris/Walz. On some level, this is all we need to know.
