09/11/2024 08:00 AMWe would like to celebrate Kim Price for his incredible hard work and dedication to making the Chester Fair as close to zero waste as possible. As the vice president of the Chester Agricultural and Mechanical Society, Kim has worked tirelessly to make the fair an event that has a reduced impact on our local environment. For the past three years, he has brought the goal of zero waste to this annual fair, which attracts upwards of 8,500 visitors.
We volunteered at this year's Chester Fair to assist Kim's initiative, along with several dozen others. We worked as trash ambassadors, rotating between the 40 stations around the fairground to help sort the three barrels of compost, recycling, and trash. Fairgoers, with the help of volunteers, used signage to help figure out which bin their waste went into.
This year, 60% of the waste generated at the fair was diverted from landfills/incineration and was either recycled or composted. When Kim first started this in 2022, it was 47%. To get to this point, Kim had worked over the course of the year with vendors to find compostable containers and utensils to fit their needs. He raised money through generous grants to help offset the extra costs. He did a lot of planning and learned each year how to make things better.
A continuing challenge for Kim has been to find enough volunteers to make this zero-waste event a success. Come join us at the Chester Fair next Aug. 22 to 25 to be a part of these efforts. Thank you, Kim, for leading this initiative.
