Valuable Space

I’m writing in support of improvements to Hubbard Park. I support the ZBA-approved concession stand, moving the volleyball court to the south side of the park, and refurbishing the remaining green space (e.g., reinforced turf) to better serve other athletic and recreational activities that happen there on a regular basis.

Essex has wetlands, meadows, and wooded land trust properties. We have parks with trees, parks with play-scapes and parks suitable for picnicking and social gatherings. But we only have one open park — Hubbard Park — with no trees, that is great for playing baseball, touch football, catch, lacrosse, and flying kites.

In 1934, the trustees of Pratt High School bought the field to be used as the school’s playing field. It was used by the school until the opening of Valley Regional High School in 1952. The field was then sold to the town. It has been well-used and loved by town residents ever since as a year-round open space for young and old sports enthusiasts. Comstock Fields in Ivoryton is also an open space that can be used for athletic and recreational activities, but it is frequently underwater. When Comstock Fields is underwater, Hubbard Park becomes the only suitable space for the broad variety of athletic activities in the three villages.
