Celebrate These Group Separately

On Nov. 10, The Morgan School hosted a celebration of Veterans Day. Veterans were invited to attend, and first responders were honored. It was a sterling program featuring an enthusiastic 30-year Air Force veteran and an emotional poem presented by a younger Army veteran. Veterans present were acknowledged by their names and service designation. The gym was packed with students, and their deportment was exemplary.

Veterans don't need to be recognized. Most of us were honored to serve. Each of us knows in our hearts what we contributed for freedom. We get one day where we can proudly get up when our name is called, one day where we can formally recall our blood, sweat, and tears. This is our day alone. To include first responders is to disrespect the contributions of both veterans and first responders. It's not Veterans and First Responders Day. Indeed, Oct. 28 is National First Responders Day. Let's celebrate both these groups separately and give them their just due.
