10/04/2023 09:06 AMMadison Hose Co. No. 1 and North Madison Volunteer Fire Company have served our town for over 100 years, volunteering their services to fight fires and enhance public safety. In return for not getting paid, the town offers a small pension when they retire. Considering the number of eligible firefighters, a pension plan needs to be in place to ensure that they get their well-deserved pension.
The plan, in effect, is in need of funding to ensure that the funds are there when they retire.
The Democrat-led Board of Finance and Board of Selectmen has let them down in their funding of this plan. They had the opportunity to add $2 million to this plan to bring it current and chose not to. Worse than that, by choosing not to fully fund it, it will cost the taxpayers an additional $52,699 per year. An 81% increase over the previous years.
Once again, the Democrats have failed the people of Madison and, this time, our volunteer firefighters, as well. We need a change.
