Will Be Deeply Missed

As a former 5th grade student of Tom Shea, I was saddened to learn of his death on Sept. 5 at 90 years old. Mr. Shea was a fantastic teacher and a great human being. He gave his Old Saybrook Middle School students early exposure to the intricacies of grammar and sentence structure. He encouraged writing for enjoyment in the journals students in his class kept in their desks throughout the school year. But what he may be most remembered for is taking his students for regular visits to the sick and the lonely at the convalescent home. Mr. Shea taught his students college-level English, but he also taught them empathy. He will be deeply missed and very, very fondly remembered.
