To Ensure the Right Investments Are Made
Blockbuster. Tower Records. Borders Books. History is littered with once proud companies that were heavily invested in their own model of success and failed to perceive - or effectively respond to threats on the horizon. Today, those companies no longer exist.
Old Saybrook need not suffer the same fate. As a lifelong resident, I, too, love this community and all it has to offer—an active downtown, lovely beaches, an abundance of open space, etc.
I also believe that we must invest to preserve what we love. Climate change may threaten our homes and beaches, but the right investments can protect our infrastructure, property, and natural resources.
Declining enrollment may challenge the independence of our schools, but providing more pre-K and building more workforce housing can attract younger families.
Sprawling growth could jeopardize our small-town feel, but we can still plan and zone for a vibrant economic future that includes affordable housing for the many seniors who wish to downsize and yet remain in the community they love.
Simply maintaining a low mill rate is not responsible governing. Endlessly studying and planning without taking the necessary actions only kicks the can down the road and makes all necessary investments more expensive.
The time to take action on the plans we’ve built is now. We need new leadership to ensure the right investments are made and that our future remains bright. Elect Democrats this fall and ensure that our children and their children can say we kept Old Saybrook special.
