Far From Done
In Old Saybrook, the work of the Police Commission is far from done. Yes, three troubling officers are no longer employed as the result of internal investigations and the responsible exercise of oversight. Also, led by a Democratic majority, residents can now use email and public comment time to bring matters of concern directly to commission members. Good progress has been made, but much more needs to happen.
The department faces a serious problem with officer recruitment and retention. Police Chief Michael Spera has proposed financial incentives and changes to benefits in the hope of attracting good certified officers. By itself, that may not solve the very real problem we have. The commission needs an independent study specific to the situation in Old Saybrook. Solutions depend on facts, not speculations. Both the department and the town have surplus money. Voters are urged to communicate with First Selectman Carl Fortuna to express the need for a data-driven study. Our future safety is in the balance.
