08/03/2023 08:00 AMIn 2021, voters of Old Saybrook expressed a strong desire for more transparency and oversight of the Department of Police Services by electing new commissioners willing to work towards those objectives. One of the first steps in increasing transparency was the establishment of email addresses for the commissioners. Many residents have taken advantage of this method to communicate concerns. In addition, the chairman was made the point of contact rather than the chief of police.
In Old Saybrook, the disciplining and/or termination of three police officers since the last election may indicate several things. One may be that the current Police Commission is doing its job of civilian oversight. Two officers involved in very disturbing actions that resulted in lawsuits against the Police Department and Town of Old Saybrook are no longer employed by the department. The chief investigated, and the commission acted. That is the kind of oversight the public demanded in the last election. Thanks to the chief and Police Commission for fulfilling their responsibilities!
