02/08/2023 08:06 AMOne of my new year’s resolutions is to keep my resolutions from the prior year! Well, mostly. But this one from 2022 won’t go away and keeps creeping back into the front of my mind, mostly at dusk and night. Why? Because it is dark, and one needs a light to see in the dark and be seen.
My resolution has been to write to my community to remind us all to be safe drivers and pedestrians at night. Invariably, as I am driving at that time, I will pass by a person, young or old, walking, running, bicycling, or just standing in place along the side of the road, and here’s the part I want you to remember – I do not see them unless they have a reflective vest or a flashlight or a headlamp. Even when we have all of that on our bodies, it is still a challenge for drivers to see pedestrians until they are really close. Please wear some kind of bright color, light, or vest when you are out at night walking, running, bicycling, or just standing in place along the side of the road. And parents, please remind your kids and teens too!
In this day and age, where drivers are distracted more than ever, make your own new year’s (and all years’) resolution to be safe walkers, runners, bikers, and drivers!
