11/03/2021 08:00 AMWhen I was in high school in the 1960s, we had great discussions in our history class about the civil rights movement and associated legislation being debated in Congress. We read articles and books—liberal, conservative, and radical ones.
We had lively, passionate and fierce discussions in the classroom, but they were civil and respectful. Rarely if ever were they of a hateful or vitriolic nature and never once did our parents stick their noses in the classroom. They had a great deal of respect for our educators to teach their children well and a wealth of confidence in their children to handle themselves just as well in the intellectual ring.
I hope that in the distant future, Guilford High School students will be able to speak just as proudly about their parents when they reflect back on their high school days. We owe them and our wonderful community nothing less.
