The Magic of Madison

In this constantly changing world, some cherished traditions remain constant. Well, sort of.

The Madison Chamber of Commerce has been bringing Santa Claus to town for close to 50 years, and this year will be no exception. But instead of the traditional one-on-one visits with Santa on the porch of the Café Allegre, we have found it necessary to pivot to a drive-through event on Saturday, Nov. 28. Much like the Trunk or Treat we hosted with the Police Department on Halloween, youngsters and families can participate, but must remain in their vehicles. Santa will arrive on his sleigh to the town’s Christmas tree (eastern end of the green, across from the Visitor Center/Chamber office) at 2 p.m., escorted by vehicles from Madison Hose and the North Madison Fire Departments. Cars may arrive by taking Copse Road to Meetinghouse Lane and drive by Santa and his helpers, who will deliver treats to all in a COVID-safe way.

Meanwhile, downtown merchants will open up the holiday season this weekend by offering shoppers the opportunity to visit either in-store or via their online sites. Local artisans and specialty food purveyors will set up pop up tents for holiday markets on the sidewalks of Wall Street and the Post Road every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to complement our great shops.

In another twist from tradition, our annual Ladies Shopping Night will begin at noon on Thursday, Dec. 3 and continue until 8 p.m. (or later). Those who prefer evening shopping can stop by the former Khaki & Black space between 5 and 6:30 p.m. for a shopping map and glass of cheer.

Finally, be sure to enjoy the Economic Development Commission’s spectacular light displays downtown. Even in the age of COVID, we still can enjoy the magic of Madison.
