07/01/2020 08:00 AMThe entire State of Maine, the Connecticut towns of Killingly and Manchester, and Quinnipiac University back in 2002, have all come around to respecting the wishes of tribal nations and have eliminated mascots that belittle and stereotype. Many tribal nations have now spoken directly to our little town, expressing a desire for the mascot to change.
Soon I’m confident that Guilford’s decision-makers will also take firm action to respect the wishes of students and citizens who want a mascot of which they can be proud, a mascot that can show up at games, a mascot that doesn’t need to be downplayed or hidden. They’ve recently scheduled a set of meetings to fully review the issue, and a full review will bring an honest answer. The “Indian” mascot is over.
