Keep the Momentum Going
We write in support of the establishment of a human rights commission under the Guilford Town Charter. While we have not experienced significant rights-related issues, several acts of vandalism have occurred in 2017, including racist graffiti, the destruction of the sensory garden at Roses for Autism, and damage to and theft of many Welcome Neighbor signs. This has led to the proposal for the Guilford Human Rights Advocates group last September.
To keep the momentum going, the group feels the best way to combat intolerance in town is through the establishment of a human rights commission within the town charter. This nonpartisan commission would provide educational opportunities for the community, and would serve as advocate for anyone experiencing discrimination within Guilford. The group would be composed of nine residents of the town and would be appointed by the Board of Selectmen for a term of three years.
It is vital to the wellbeing of Guilford that the various racial, religious, and ethnic groups residing here, in addition to individuals of differing genders, sexual orientations, ages, and abilities, serve as a source of community strength.
The commission will also encourage community-wide education through both school and public programs.
Guilford is a wonderful and caring town and we’re very fortunate to be a part of this community. Establishing a Guilford human rights commission gives everyone an opportunity to feel valued and understood.
We strongly support and endorse the proposal to establish a Guilford human rights commission as we feel that there is a definite need for an outlet to discuss human rights-related issues. While Guilford is a wonderful town with strong civic pride, there will always be conflicts and issues that may need to be addressed and the commission will provide such a platform.
