The Real Problem
From reading the Sept. 7 story “New Crosswalk May Be Coming to Downtown Madison,” no one seems to be addressing the real problem. The reason there is so much jay walking is due to the recent professional re-design of the Route l median divider. This design placed five bricked crossing pathways at regular intervals along length of the median divider, which has greatly encouraged jay walking.
What did you think was going to happen? Was it the expectation that the public was just going to admire the color palette of the bricks?
Creating an additional planned crosswalk is not going to eliminate the jay walking problem, unless you remove the five existing bricked pathways as well as installing a barrier of some type along the centerline of the median.
