Forever Baffled
On April 30, my husband was leaving for work and discovered his wallet was missing. We both checked everywhere, including the car, which was parked in the driveway. He has a habit of leaving his wallet in the center console of his Jeep. He retraced his steps from the day before, made phone calls to stores he shopped in—nothing! If you’ve ever lost something as personal as a wallet, you know it tends to leave you feeling slightly numb and exposed. We continued at certain intervals during the day to thoroughly search the car again hoping that we somehow missed it. Again, nothing.
After my final attempt, I retreated back inside, checking my phone messages thinking that maybe a good Samaritan would find the wallet and call us. I thought I’d give it one final search and went back out to the car. I again lifted the center console. I began to shake as I spied the missing wallet. It was placed neatly on top of the other items stored in the console. My husband and I were beyond words. We both knew that someone had returned the wallet to its original spot sometime that afternoon with both of us at home.
Did someone’s elder find a young one in possession of a stolen wallet and force him or her to return it, or did the guilty party have second thoughts and return the wallet fully intact themselves? As a last thought, we wanted to believe perhaps that my husband’s repeated prayers to Saint Anthony, one who is often prayed to for his aid in finding lost articles, were answered.
We will be forever baffled, but thankful, that our situation was resolved, though leaving us both with very eerie feelings. We continue to question: Divine intervention or second thoughts?
