Better Communication is Necessary
This letter is written to encourage Old Saybrook voters to consider re-electing Bob Finch to the Old Saybrook Police Commission. Bob has given 16 years to making Old Saybrook government work. He has served on the Board of Selectman, Board of Finance, and Police Commission.
Bob recognizes the publics concern regarding the Police Department. Better communication is necessary. Current over-budget costs are mainly due to being short four uniformed officers due to retirements and officers accepting jobs outside of law enforcement. Many shifts require officers at overtime to fill the voids. This is necessary to ensure 24/7 coverage. There never should be a time when an officer is not available to respond to a 911 call. In Old Saybrook the Police Department is the first responders to all 911 calls, including medical. Last year there were more than 1,400 medical calls alone.
Being a member of the Police Commission is a very demanding volunteer position. Meetings are held according to agendas; minutes must be posted while adhering to state law and town charter; and state workplace laws and contracts negotiated with the varius unions involved.
The last few years have been turbulent ones for the Police Commission. Bob will help to regulate and administer the commissions responsibilities. He deserves your readers’ support in the coming election.
