North Haven Senior Legion Sweeps Series Against Branford

The North Haven Senior American Legion 19-U baseball team played a three-game series against Branford last week and swept the series by notching victories in all three contests. Post 76 improved its record to 7-2 in the Zone 2 standings for the summer season after sweeping its series with Branford.

North Haven notched a 13-4 home victory over Branford in the first game of the series on June 26. North Haven scored 2 runs in the first inning before plating 5 runs in both the second and third to hold a 12-3 advantage through three and win the game in convincing fashion.

Shaun Murray pitched the first 4 innings to get the win for Post 76. Mike Brandt tossed 3 hitless innings in relief to finish off the victory.

North Haven’s offense pounded out 15 hits in the win. Sal Giaimo went 3-for-4 with 4 runs scored, 3 RBI, and a stolen base for Post 76. Derek Novicki went 3-for-4 with a walk, 3 runs, 2 RBI, and a stolen base; and Tyler Harger was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI for Head Coach Mike Busillo’s club.

Chris Hager went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored in the victory. Murray went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI, Will Sullivan was 1-for-3 with 3 RBI, Tyler Signore drew 2 walks and scored 2 runs, and Manuel Lopes had 2 walks with a run scored.

On June 28, Post 76 played a road game versus Branford and recorded an 18-0 shutout in 5 innings. North Haven scored 5 runs in the first inning, 4 in the second, 5 in the fourth, and then added 4 in the fifth on its way to the victory.

Hager threw a complete game for North Haven. Hager allowed no runs on 4 hits and 1 walk to go with 7 strikeouts in 5 innings pitched.

Harger went 3-for-5 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI to lead the Post 76 offense. Blasi went 3-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI; Declan Finkle went 2-for-4 with a walk, a run, and 3 RBI; and Brandt was 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Ty Rooney went 1-for-3 with 2 walks, 2 runs, and an RBI for North Haven. Tyler Signore went 1-for-2 with 2 runs scored; Murray was 1-for-1 a walk and 2 runs scored; Busillo had 2 walks with 2 RBI; and Sullivan drew 2 walks and scored a run.

Post 76 finished off the sweep by earning a 6-1 home win against Branford in the finale on June 29. Trailing 1-0, North Haven scored 3 runs in the second inning to grab a 3-1 lead. North Haven went on to score 1 run in the fourth and 2 runs in the sixth to pull away for the victory.

Ryan Bauman delivered 6 solid innings on the mound to get the win for Post 76. Murray allowed just 1 run on 6 hits to go with 5 strikeouts in the contest. Murray worked a scoreless seventh to close it out.

Finkle went 2-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI, and a stolen base to pace the North Haven offense. Lopes went 1-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI; Harger went 1-for-3 with a double, a run, and an RBI; Sullivan was 1-for-3 with a double and 2 runs scored. Brandt went 1-for-1 with an RBI, while Giaimo had 2 walks with a 1 scored for North Haven, which was bolstered by some great defensive plays from Hager in center field.

During the previous week’s action, North Haven took an 11-9, 8-inning home loss against West Haven on June 25. North Haven trailed 9-6 before plating 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score. The contest ultimately went to extra innings, where West Haven won the game by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the eighth for the 11-9 final.

Harger went 2-for-4 with a walk, double, 2 runs, and 3 RBI for North Haven. Hager went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run, and 2 RBI; Ty Rooney went 2-for-3 with 2 walks, a double, 2 runs, and an RBI; and Giaimo was 2-for-4 with a walk, a run, and 2 RBI.
