06/19/2022 12:00 AMThe Pirates posted their second sweep in a row when they blanked the Dodgers by a 6-0 score during Week 7 play in the Deep River Horseshoe League on June 9. The Pirates moved to within a half-game of the first-place Marlins in the league standings with the victory.
North Branford resident Tony Malerba of the Pirates finished with a 102 series in the win, recording the third-best score in the B Division on the week. Malerba also set a league season-high with a 42-point game.
The Marlins have seen their first-place lead slowly shrink over the past several weeks, but are still hanging on to the top spot following a win against the Cardinals last week. The Marlins defeated the Cardinals by the final score of 4-2 in the matchup.
Haddam resident Mike Zanelli, Sr., was the top scorer in the A Division with a 147 for the week. Old Lyme resident Bill Beckwith of the Red Sox (143) and Chester resident John Sciacca of the Royals (141) also topped the 140-point series mark, putting them in second and third place, respectively, among A Division pitchers. This marks the first time since Week 8 of 2019 that three players scored more than 140 in a single week. Beckwith became the first player to score in every box of his four games this season, giving him a perfect game.
Cody Layton of Deep River recorded the top score in the B Division with a series of 120 for the week. Todd Nuhn of Killingworth (115) and Malerba (102) was next in lime among the B Division throwers. East Hartford resident Deb Scully and Anthony Conkling of Marlborough both scored an 88 series to finish tied atop the leaderboard for the C Division on the week. Clinton resident Mike Beckwith posted the third-highest series with a 75.
The Marlins now have a record of 28.5-13.5 on the season, while the Pirates are now sporting a record of 28-14 as they sit in second place by the narrowest of margins. The Orioles are in third place with a record of 24.5-17.5, and the Giants own the fourth-place position at 23-19 on the year. The Rangers, White Sox, Tigers, and Yankees are all tied for fifth place with their records of 22-20. The Dodgers, Red Sox, and Royals are all tied the next spot with their marks of 20.5-21.5. The Padres are 20-22, the Cardinals have a record of 19-23, and the Mets are 18.5-23.5. The Cubs and Reds both have records of 17-25, and the Braves and Angels are both 16-26.
