Morgan Boys’ Lacrosse Takes Defeats in Shoreline Final, First Round of States; Golf Team Goes 11-5 for Regular Season
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Morgan boys’ lacrosse team took a 7-6 loss to Haddam-Killingworth in the Shoreline Conference final and then won its first game in states before taking a defeat in its next contest of the Class S bracket. The Huskies finished the 2022 campaign with an overall record of 11-9.
No. 3 seed Morgan took on top-seeded Haddam-Killingworth in the championship game of the Shoreline Conference Tournament at the Indian River Complex on May 26. Morgan held a 4-2 lead at halftime, but H-K scored the first 5 goals of the second half to take a 7-4 advantage. The Huskies came back by scoring a pair of goals to make it 7-6, but the Cougars hung one for the victory.
The next day, 13th-seeded Morgan opened up the Class S State Tournament by earning an 11-8 home victory over No. 20 Valley Regional in a qualifying-round contest. Then on June 1, the Huskies took a 17-4 loss at No. 4 seed Sheehan in the first round of the state draw.
Boys’ Golf
The Morgan boys’ golf team completed regular-season play with a record of 11-5 after earning a one-stroke road win over Waterford last week. On May 31, the Huskies competed against Waterford at Great Neck Country Club and won the contest by the score of 172-173.
Sophomore CJ Giuliano recorded Morgan’s best score of the day by carding a 39. Senior Nick Schmidt posted a total of 42 for the Huskies. Senior Drew Nye scored a 44, senior Tyler Greenhouse finished with a 47, and sophomore Jack Nye carded a 50.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Morgan boys’ outdoor track squad was represented by several competitors when the Shoreline Conference and Class S State championship meets recently took place. Morgan scored 30 points to finish ninth in Shorelines at Old Saybrook High School on May 25 and then finished in 27th place with 4 points at states at Willow Brook Park on May 31.
Senior Cameron Johnson claimed first place in the 400 by running a time of 51.53 seconds at the Shoreline Conference Championship. Fellow senior Justin Tunney took first place in the shot put with a toss of 43 feet-3.5 inches.
Johnson went on to score Morgan’s 4 points at the Class S State Championship. Johnson crossed the finish line with a time of 52.11 in the 400 to take fifth place.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Morgan girls’ outdoor track team sent a collection of athletes to take part in the recent Shoreline Conference Championship and Class S State Championship meets. The Huskies came in ninth place by scoring 20 points at Shorelines and then finished in 23rd place with 7 points scored in the state meet.
Junior Caeley Ayer finished in second place for the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.26 seconds at the Shoreline Conference Championship at Old Saybrook High School on May 25. Freshman Natalie Estabrook finished third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:52.09. Morgan’s 4x100 relay of junior Logan Pernal, sophomore Glenda Zhiminaicela, freshman Olivia Ruotolo, and Ayer took third place (52.95).
Ayer went to take sixth place in the finals of the 100 with a time of 12.90 in the Class S State Championship at Willow Brook Park on May 31. Morgan’s 4x100 relay of Pernal, Zhiminaicela, Ruotolo, and Ayer claimed fifth place (52.20).
Boys’ Tennis
The Morgan boys’ tennis team saw its season come to a close with a loss versus Northwest Catholic in the qualifying round of the Class S State Tournament last week. No. 18 seed Morgan faced No. 15 Northwest Catholic for a Class S qualifying-round contest on May 27 and took a 5-2 defeat at the University of St. Joseph. The Huskies posted a record of 9-8 for the season.
Girls’ Tennis
The Morgan girls’ tennis team took a loss against East Catholic in the first round of the Class S State Tournament last week. On May 31, the 12th-seeded Huskies hit the road to face No. 5 East Catholic in the first round of states and lost the contest by a 7-0 score. Morgan finished its season with a mark of 9-9.
