H-K’s Track Teams Cap Off Undefeated Regular Seasons; Several Squads Competing in Shorelines This Week

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ outdoor track competed an undefeated regular season with a record of 8-0 by earning an 88-61 home win versus Portland on May 17. This marks the fourth-straight season that the Cougars have gone undefeated, amassing a record of 30-0 during that time span. H-K also has a dual-meet record of 123-6 since the 2007 campaign.

Senior Aidan Law claimed first place in the 100 (11.2), the 200 (22.8), the high jump (5-9), and the long jump (20-1) against Portland. H-K also received victories from junior John Panzera in the 110 hurdles (16.8), senior Tyler Robinson in the 800 (2:15), senior Caleb Freeman in the 1,600 (4:54), and senior Evan Baird in the 3,200 (11:41).

Senior Jared Firth finished in the pole vault (10-6), and junior Orion Inkel claimed first place in the triple jump (36-3) for H-K. The Cougars’ 4x800 relay was also victorious on the afternoon.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth notched a 108-42 home victory versus Portland on May 17 to finish off their regular season with a perfect record of 8-0. The Cougars have gone undefeated in each of the past three seasons, compiling a record of 19-0 over that time. The program has a record of 87-9 since the 2012 season.

Senior Scarlett Strom finished first in the discus (80-11), the shot put (27-1), and the javelin (87-5) for H-K in its win over Portland. The Cougars were additionally bolstered by first-place performances from sophomore Mariella Fulcher in the 100 (12.8) and 200 (27.5), junior Leah Sosnowski in the 110 hurdles (17.1) and 300 hurdles (52.6), and senior Brianna Minervino in the 400 (64.0).

Senior Ly-Linh Criscuolo earned top honors in the long jump (16-1) and triple jump (32-0), while senior Jess Timothy won in the high jump (4-8) for the Cougars. H-K also claimed victory in the 4x100 and 4x400 relay events.

Softball

The Haddam-Killingworth softball team finished the 2022 regular season with a record of 18-2 after claiming victory in all three of its games last week. The Cougars have qualified for both the Shoreline Conference Tournament and the Class M State Tournament this year.

H-K began the week by notching a 4-3 win at East Lyme on May 17. The Cougars scored 3 runs in the fifth inning to take the lead over the Vikings. Sophomore Annabelle Zajac drove home the first run, followed by a 2-run single from sophomore Cheyenne LaTouche.

Junior Kaleigh Bodak notched win No. 12 on the year by pitching 5 innings for H-K. Sophomore Brooke Hickman threw 2 scoreless innings of relief to get the save and also had 2 hits with 2 runs scored at the plate.

The following day, the Cougars hosted Old Saybrook and won the contest by the score of 21-0 in 5 innings. Then on May 20, H-K posted a 15-1, 5-inning win against Morgan on Senior Night.

Seniors Maddy LaTouche and Audrey Snyder combined to go 3-for-5 with 3 walks, 4 runs scored, and 4 RBI to help H-K get the victory in its Senior Night game. Cheyenne LaTouche had a double and a triple with 2 RBI for the Cougars. Bodak won her 13th game of the season, allowing just 3 hits to go with 6 strikeouts.

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team won two of its last three games of the regular season to finish with a record of 13-7 for that portion of the campaign. The Cougars will be competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week and then have the Class M State Tournament on tap after that.

The Cougars kicked off their week by earning a 3-1 home victory over Cromwell on May 16. Senior Alex Sheehan pitched a 4-hitter with 5 strikeouts to pick up his third win of the year. Senior Nick Glynn and senior Lucas Kamoen both had 2 hits to pace the H-K offense.

The following day, H-K hit the road to face Ellington and won the contest by a 7-5 score. Senior Caden Civiello knocked a 2-out single to bring home the go-ahead runs for the Cougars in the top of the seventh inning. Kamoen earned the win after pitching 3 innings of relief and also had 2 hits at the dish.

The Cougars wrapped up their week by taking a 2-1 home loss to Old Lyme in a Saturday morning matchup on May 21.

H-K has the No. 4 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and hosted No. 5 North Branford for a quarterfinal game on May 23 (after press time). With a victory, the Cougars would have faced the winner of top-seeded Valley Regional and No. 8 East Hampton in the semis on May 24 (after press time). The Shoreline final takes place at Palmer Field on Friday, May 27 at 7 p.m.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ lacrosse team gained a split of two recent home games to finish with the regular season with a record of 7-9 this year. The Cougars have qualified for both the Shoreline Conference Tournament and the Class S State Tournament.

On May 16, H-K hosted Mercy and took a 10-9 loss to the Tigers. The Cougars trailed by 8 goals at halftime, but outscored Mercy 8-1 in the second half to nearly pull off the comeback. Senior Yumi Imai scored 3 goals for H-K, while senior Grace Cassidy and freshman Seanna Ruimerman both scored 2 goals. Sophomore Sammy Ruimerman and sophomore Jaimey DiNapoli added 1 goal apiece.

Three days later, the Cougars played a home game versus Old Lyme and defeated the Wildcats by the score of 15-7. Imai netted 4 goals in the victory, and Cassidy and Seanna Ruimerman had 3 goals each. Junior Audrey Wrinn scored 2 goals, while senior Emily Sorrentino, junior Sophia Ramino, and Sammy Ruimerman all scored 1 goal. Head Coach Sheila Reilly said that her team played its best game of the season in the winning effort, praising H-K for its performance in all aspects.

H-K faced Old Saybrook in the Shoreline Conference semifinals on May 24 (after press time). With a win, the Cougars would play the winner of North Branford and Valley Regional for the title on Thursday, May 26 at 5 p.m. at the Indian River Complex.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ lacrosse team took three defeats during the final week of its regular season. The Cougars are sporting a record of 12-4 as they get ready to compete in Shorelines and then states.

On May 17, H-K took an 8-5 loss against RHAM in a road game. Then on May 19, the Cougars were back on the road to face Old Lyme and dropped a 7-6 decision in triple overtime. Junior Alex Phipps scored 3 goals for H-K in the contest. Senior Corey Phipps had 1 goal with 1 assist, junior Aaron McLeod scored a goal, and freshman Gunnar Howes contributed an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Braden Civiello played a great game in net for the Cougars.

H-K went on to lose to Wethersfield via forfeit for game that was scheduled to take place at home on May 20. H-K is the No. 1 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and hosted No. 4 Valley Regional in the semifinals on May 24 (after press time). If the Cougars win, they will play the winner of No. 2 Old Lyme and No. 3 Morgan in the final on Thursday, May 26 at 7 p.m. at the Indian River Complex.

Boys’ Golf

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ golf team moved to 6-4-1 on the year after taking a road loss to Morgan last week. On May 18, H-K competed against Morgan at Clinton Country Club and lost to the Huskies by the score of 178-189.

Sophomore Declan Kessler posted the Cougars’ top score with a 46 for the round. Senior Andrew Fleig shot a 47, senior Gabe Barile and freshman Andrew Crayton both posted a score of 48, and junior Jacob Maier finished with a 51 for H-K.

Boys’ Tennis

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ tennis team took defeats in a pair of home matches to close out the regular season last week. The Cougars posted an overall record of 4-11 on the year.

H-K took a 5-2 home loss against Old Lyme on May 16. Sophomore Eddie White claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the No. 1 singles match for H-K. Freshman Bryce Leiberman won his No. 2 singles contest by a 6-1, 6-1 score.

The day after that, the Cougars hosted Morgan and lost to the Huskies by a 6-1 final. Leiberman netted a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles to account for H-K’s point on the day.

Girls’ Tennis

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ tennis team took a road loss versus Morgan in its final match of the regular season last week. On May 17, the Cougars lost to Morgan by a 7-0 score to finish with a record of 0-14 on the campaign.
