The Westbrook girls’ tennis team improved its record to 13-2 on the season after winning three of its four matches in recent action. The Knights claimed victories over Coginchaug, North Branford, and Cromwell before taking a loss against Old Lyme to finish out the week.
Westbrook began the week by earning a 5-2 home win versus Coginchaug on May 9. Freshman Megan Bache posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 singles match for Westbrook. Junior Ava Ciarcia netted a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles for the Knights.
Westbrook’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Bree Koplas and junior Delaney Belcourt triumphed by the final score of 6-0, 6-1. The No. 2 duo of senior Jami Sacco and sophomore Olivia Palumbo posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory; and the No. 3 tandem of senior Xan Zanzalari and senior Marlee Archer won their contest by the final tally of 6-1, 6-1.
Two days later, the Knights played a road match against North Branford and blanked the Thunderbirds by a 7-0 score. Senior Gianni Salisbury claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 1 singles match. Bache (6-4, 6-1), Ciarcia (6-3, 6-0), and Caroline Dias (6-0, 6-0) also notched straight-sets victories for Westbrook. The Knights’ doubles teams of Koplas and Belcourt (6-0, 6-2), Sacco and Palumbo (6-0, 6-0), and Zanzalari and junior Adriana Stranieri (6-0, 6-1) all won their matches in straight sets.
On May 13, Westbrook hosted Cromwell and netted a 7-0 win against the Panthers. Salisbury rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory for the Knights in the No. 1 singles match. Bache (6-0, 6-0), Dias (6-2, 7-6 [7-1]), and Carcia (6-4, 6-3) were also straight-sets winners on the singles courts. The Knights were additionally bolstered by victories from their doubles duos of Koplas-Belcourt (6-2, 6-0), Sacco-Palumbo (6-2, 6-2), and Zanzalari-Stranieri (6-0, 6-0).
Then on May 15, Westbrook took a 6-1 road loss to Old Lyme in its final contest of the week.
Boys’ Tennis
The Westbrook boys’ tennis team played four matches last week and came away with three victories to boost the team’s record at 12-2 this season.
On May 9, Westbrook posted a 4-0 road win over Coginchaug that marked the team’s sixth-straight victory. The following day, the Knights hosted Old Lyme and were edged out by the score of 4-3. Then on May 11, Westbrook defeated Haddam-Killingworth by a 5-1 score in a road match. The Knights returned home to face Cromwell on May 13 and recorded a 6-0 shutout over the Panthers.
Softball
The Westbrook-Portland (W-P) softball team claimed victory in two of its four games last week to move to 3-13 on the season.
W-P picked up its second win of the year when the Knights earned a 29-11 home victory versus Holy Family on May 9. Junior Lisa Litevich was the winning pitcher for the Knights and also went 4-for-5 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI. Senior Tara Fitzgibbons went 3-for-4 with 2 triples, 4 runs scored, and 4 RBI; while senior Leah May was 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run, 3 runs, and 5 RBI in the victory.
Then on May 11, W-P took a 22-1 loss against Hale-Ray in a home game. Fitzgibbons went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The day after that, the Knights hit the road to face Bassick and won the contest by a 28-9 final. May had a huge day at the plate by going 5-for-5 with 2 home runs, one of which was a grand slam, with 11 RBI and 4 runs scored for the Knights. Senior Sam Nunez went 3-for-3 with a homer, 4 runs, and 5 RBI; and Fitzgibbons was 2-for-2 with 4 runs and 2 RBI.
W-P closed out the week by taking a 20-1 road loss to Hale-Ray on May 14. Sophomore Dorothy Riley went 2-for-2; and Litevich went 2-for-3 for the Knights.
Baseball
The Westbrook baseball team lost two home games last week to move to 0-16 on the year.
The Knights took an 11-0 defeat versus Old Lyme at Westbrook High School on May 9. Then on May 14, Westbrook hosted Whitney Tech and dropped a 4-2 decision in the Saturday morning matchup.
