H-K Boys’ Lacrosse Refusing to Lose; Softball and Baseball Squads Notch Two Victories
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ lacrosse team improved its record to 12-1 on the year after scoring victories in both of its contests last week. The Cougars have now won 10 games in a row.
H-K started off the week by earning a 10-2 road win over Old Saybrook on May 10. Then on May 12, the Cougars hosted Cromwell and defeated the Panthers by the final tally of 13-1.
Senior Corey Phipps turned in a big-time performance by netting 7 goals in H-K’s victory versus Cromwell. Freshman Gunnar Howes had 3 goals and 1 assist, while junior Aaron McLeod scored 1 goal to go with 1 assist. Senior Matteo Piacenti and junior Nate Kelly both scored 1 goal, and junior Nolan Braren contributed 1 assist for the Cougars in the win.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ lacrosse team took two recent defeats to move to 7-8 on the season.
The Cougars lost to Old Saybrook by the score of 15-5 in a home game on May 10. Two days later, H-K hit the road to face Cromwell and was edged out by the final score of 12-11.
Softball
The Haddam-Killingworth softball team is now standing with a record of 15-2 on the season after claiming victory in two of its three games last week.
The Cougars began their week with a 14-0 road win versus Old Lyme in 6 innings on May 9. Brooke Hickman pitched 3 scoreless innings with 7 strikeouts to notch the win in the circle. Kaleigh Bodak and Bella Richwine combined to throw the final four innings and finish off the victory.
Hickman also hit a 2-run home run for the Cougars. Annabella Zajac and Keira Czarkowski had 3 hits each for H-K, while Cheyenne LaTouche reached base 4 times and had 4 RBI.
The next day, H-K hosted East Hampton and rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Bellringers. Trailing 5-3, H-K plated 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game in walk-off fashion. The Cougars tied the score on a single by Caley Napoletano and then won it when Zajac hit a long triple to left field to bring home Napoletano with the winning run. Bodak earned the win by pitching 2 innings of relief for Haddam-Killingworth.
Then on May 13, H-K played a road game versus Cromwell and took a 7-0 loss in the matchup.
Baseball
The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team played three road games last week and came away with a pair of victories to boost its record to 11-6 this spring.
H-K took a 9-1 defeat at Valley Regional on May 9. Blake Kamoen had 2 hits for the Cougars in the contest.
The next day, H-K hit the road to face East Hampton and doubled up the Bellringers by a 6-3 score. Alex Sheehan struck out 14 batters in 5 innings to get the win for H-K. Lucas Kamoen threw the final 2 innings to lock up the victory. Todd Butler had 2 hits to pace the Cougars’ offense.
H-K closed out its week by posting a 1-0 road win over East Granby on May 12. Callen Powers tossed a 1-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts for his fifth win on the year. The Cougars scored the only run of the game when Declan Christopher scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
Boys’ Golf
The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ golf squad won two of its three home matches last week to improve the team’s record to 6-3-1 this season.
H-K began its week by earning a 188-205 home win versus Valley Regional at Black Birch Golf Course on May 10. Senior Andrew Fleig collected medalist honors by shooting a low score of 42 for the Cougars. Junior Jacob Maier shot a 48, senior Gabe Barile and freshman Andrew Crayton both finished with a 49, and sophomore Declan Kessler posted a 54 in the victory.
The next day, the Cougars hosted East Hampton and won the match by the score of 180-280. Crayton was the medalist on the day with a score of 43. Barile shot a 45, Maiser and Kessler both carded a 46, and Fleig finished with a score of 47.
H-K went on to take a 168-171 loss against Cromwell in a home match on May 12. Barile (41), Crayton (43), Maier (43), Kessler (44), and Fleig (45) competed for the Cougars at the meet.
Boys’ Tennis
The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ tennis squad lost two home matches last week and is now 4-9 on the year.
On May 9, H-K took a 6-1 defeat versus East Hampton in a home match. Freshman Bryce Leiberman claimed a 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match for the Cougars.
Two days later, the Cougars hosted Westbrook and lost to the Knights by a 6-1 final. Sophomore Eddie White claimed victory at No. 1 singles for H-K.
Girls’ Tennis
The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ tennis team hosted East Hampton for its lone matchup of the week. The Cougars took a 5-2 defeat against the Bellringers at H-K High School to move to 0-13 this season.
