The Old Saybrook baseball team played three games last week and claimed victory in all three of those contests to improve to 11-3 on the season. The Rams earned two wins versus Hale-Ray to go with a victory over Portland in last week’s action.
Old Saybrook kicked off its week by posting a 9-8 home win over Hale-Ray on May 2. The Rams broke open a 6-6 game by plating 3 runs in the fourth inning and then held on for the victory against the Noises.
Sophomore Auggie Albert went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and 3 RBI for Old Saybrook in the win. Sophomore Connor Lane went 2-for-2 with 2 runs and an RBI; senior Nick Rothman was 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI, and 2 stolen bases; and senior Noah Hester went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Three days later, the Rams were on the road to face Portland and won the game by a 15-7 score. Lane picked up the win in relief after pitching 4 hitless innings with 8 strikeouts for Old Saybrook. Lane also went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, 2 runs scored, and 6 RBI in the victory. Albert went 3-for-3 with 2 homers, 3 runs scored, 3 RBI, and a stolen base.
Senior Carson Brown went 2-for-4 with a walk, 2 runs, and 2 RBI for the Rams. Sophomore Ed Devaney went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run, and an RBI; and Hester was 1-for-4 with a walk, a double, a run, and RBI, and a stolen base.
Then on May 7, the Rams played a road game versus Hale-Ray and claimed a 12-2 victory. Senior Noah Grace tossed 6 strong innings to get the win, allowing just 1 unearned run on 3 hits to go with 8 strikeouts. Devaney went 4-for-4 with 2 runs and an RBI; senior Nick Scalzo was 2-for-4 with a double, a run, and 4 RBI; Lane went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, and 2 RBI; and Grace was 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored and an RBI.
Softball
The Old Saybrook softball team took two defeats last week to move to 1-10 on the season.
Old Saybrook started off its week by playing a doubleheader at Hale-Ray on May 2. The Rams lost both ends of the doubleheader against the Noises, taking a 17-4 loss in the first game and a 17-5 defeat in the second contest.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse squad improved to 10-1 on the season by winning both of last week’s matchups. The Rams defeated both St. Bernard and Cromwell in convincing fashion to make for a great week on the field.
Old Saybrook kicked off its week by claiming a 15-2 road win versus St. Bernard on May 2. Senior Lily Cody scored 5 goals to go with 1 assist for the Rams in the victory. Freshman Gretchen Kawecki scored 4 goals, while junior Chelsea Heinke had 2 goals with 2 assists.
Senior Grace Adams had 2 goals and 1 assist for Old Saybrook. Senior Sophia Gormley and freshman Ayla D’Anna added 1 goal apiece. Senior goalie Samantha Wakelee made 6 saves in net for the Rams, whose defensive effort was led by senior Alexa Coty, senior Lilly Sigersmith, junior Weston Richards, and freshman Grace Desmond.
Three days later, the Rams hosted Cromwell and defeated the Panthers by the final tally of 19-11. Cody scored 7 goals, including 5 on penalty shots, to go with 4 assists in the win. Kawecki scored 4 goals to go with 3 assists, while Heinke had 4 goals and 1 assist. Adams had 2 goals with 1 assist, junior Maddie Beaudoin scored 2 goals, and sophomore Amelia Sigersmith handed out 2 assists. Wakelee made 9 saves in goal for Old Saybrook.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Old Saybrook boys’ lacrosse team hit the road to square off against Cromwell for its lone contest of the week. The Rams notched an 11-8 victory over the Panthers to improve their overall record to 4-6 for the 2022 season.
Girls’ Tennis
The Old Saybrook girls’ tennis team played two home matches last week and came away with a split to move to 4-6 this year.
On May 2, the Rams hosted Westbrook and took a 6-0 defeat. The following afternoon, Old Saybrook competed against East Hampton in a home match and edged out the Bellringers by a 4-3 score.
Boys’ Tennis
The Old Saybrook boys’ tennis team moved to 2-8 on the year after taking two losses last week.
The Rams took a 6-1 home loss versus East Hampton on May 3. Senior Victor Fuda claimed a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory in the No. 2 singles match for Old Saybrook.
On May 5, the Rams played a road match against Westbrook and lost to the Knights by a 6-1 score.
Boys’ Golf
The Old Saybrook boys’ golf team took three defeats on the road last week to move to 2-5-1 this season.
On May 2, Old Saybrook took a 177-199 road loss against North Branford at Indian Springs Golf Course. Sophomore Drew Kulman shot a 40 for the Rams to share medalist honors with sophomore Jack O’Brien of North Branford. Sophomore Rylan Murphy and sophomore Jacob Speed both scored a 50 for Old Saybrook, while fellow Conner Cassella finished with a score of 59.
The following day, the Rams took a 185-189 defeat to Coginchaug in a road match at Lyman Orchards Golf Course. Then on May 5, Old Saybrook was back on the road to face Haddam-Killingworth and lost to the Cougars by the score of 185-194 at Black Birch Golf Course. Kulman (42), Cassella (45), Speed (50), and junior Peter Wisialowski (56) competed for Old Saybrook at the meet.
