H-K’s Track Teams Continue Undefeated Seasons; Boys’ Lacrosse Picks Up Three More Wins

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ outdoor track team hosted its first home meet of the season when the Cougars took on Valley Regional and Westbrook on May 3. The Cougars earned wins versus both Valley (117-28) and Westbrook (104-41) to improve their record to 6-0 this year.

Junior John Panzera finished first in the 110 hurdles (17.5) and the 300 hurdles (44.2) for H-K at the meet. Senior Andrew Hedges won the 800 (2:12) and the 1,600 (4:45).

The Cougars also received victories from senior Aidan Law in the 200 (23.2), junior Alex Lara in the 400 (52.6), senior Caleb Freeman in the 3,200 (10:42), senior Jared Frith in the pole vault (10-0), and sophomore Kevin White in the triple jump (36-3). H-K’s 4x400 and 4x800 relays were also victorious on the afternoon.

During the previous week’s action, H-K notched victories over Morgan (101-31) and North Branford (127-10) in a road meet at the Peters Complex in Clinton. Senior Kevin Cavrell took first place in the 400 (54.0) the javelin (107-4), and the shot put (35-10); while Law earned top honors in the 200 (23.9), the long jump (21-1.5), and the high jump (5-6).

H-K was additionally bolstered by first-place finishes from Panzera in the 110 hurdles (18.4) and 300 hurdles (48.6), Lara in the 1,600 (5:11), senior Evan Baird in the 3,200 (11:19), sophomore Andres Montes in the triple jump (38-3), and Firth in the discus (79-0). The Cougars also finished first in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ outdoor track team improved to 6-0 by sweeping a home meet against Westbrook and Valley Regional last week. The Cougars posted victories against Valley (107-43) and Westbrook (128-21) to stay perfect on the campaign.

Senior Scarlett Strom finished first in the discus (89-11), shot put (27-4), and the javelin (79-4) for H-K in the meet. Senior Brianna Nugent claimed first place in the 100 hurdles (17.2) and the 300 hurdles (52.4), while junior Izzy Berardino won the 800 (2:37) and the 1,600 (5:48).

H-K also saw first-place performances from senior Jess Timothy in the long jump (14-6) and high jump (4-10), sophomore Mariella Fulcher in the 100 (13.5), senior Brianna Minervino in the 400 (63.6), freshman Keira Sehl-Albert in the 3,200 (13:47), and senior Ly-Linh Criscuolo in the triple jump (33-1). The Cougars also won the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 relays.

One week earlier, H-K swept a meet at the Peters Complex in Clinton by earning wins versus Morgan (100-31) and North Branford (119-11). Strom placed first in the discus (77-3), shot put (25-10), and javelin (78-6) for the Cougars.

H-K also received victories from Timothy in the long jump (15-4) and high jump (4-8), Nugent in the 100 hurdles (17.6), junior Leah Sosnowski in the 300 hurdles (52.9), Fulcher in the 200 (27.5), freshman Olivia Macaluso in the 800 (2:46.3), Berardino in the 1,600 (6:04), junior Kaleigh Nelligan in the 3,200, and Criscuolo in the triple jump (33-4.5). H-K also finished first in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ lacrosse team improved to 10-1 this after winning all three of its games on last week’s schedule.

H-K started off the week by claiming a 10-3 win against Valley Regional in a home game on May 3. Freshman Gunnar Howes scored 2 goals to go with 3 assists for the Cougars. Senior Corey Phipps had 3 goals and 1 assist, junior while Nolan Braren also netted 3 goals. Junior Aaron McLeod scored 2 goals, and junior Alex Phipps had 1 assist. Sophomore goalie Braden Civiello picked up the win in net for H-K.

Two days later, H-K hosted North Branford and claimed a 6-5 win versus the Thunderbirds in double overtime. Then on May 7, the Cougars faced North Haven on the road and posted a 4-2 win over the Nighthawks. Corey Phipps scored 2 goals for the Cougars, including a big insurance goal that gave them a 4-2 lead in the final minutes of the game. Alex Phipps and McLeod both scored 1 goal, while Braren and senior Sam Young each had an assist. Junior Jack Insalaco turned in a huge performance at the long-stick midfielder position by scooping up several loose balls and picking off plenty of passes for Haddam-Killingworth.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ lacrosse team played three games last week and came away with one win to move to 6-7 this season.

H-K took a 13-9 home loss to Bacon Academy on May 2. The next day, H-K was on the road to face Valley Regional and lost the contest by a 19-6 final.

Then on May 5, the Cougars took a 13-11 defeat against North Branford in a home game. Senior Yumi Imai scored 2 goals and had 3 assists for H-K. Freshman Ava Ramino scored 3 goals, junior Sophia Ramino and sophomore Seanna Ruimerman both had 2 goals, and senior Grace Cassidy added a goal for the Cougars.

H-K finished its week by posting a 21-9 win versus Rocky Hill in a non-conference road game on May 7.

Softball

The Haddam-Killingworth softball team improved to 13-1 after earning a convincing win at Valley Regional last week. The Cougars defeated the Warriors by the final score of 17-7 on May 3 to put their 13th win of the year in the books.

H-K hit 4 home runs in last week’s victory over Valley Regional. Sophomore Cheyenne LaTouche, sophomore Annabella Zajac, sophomore Ivy McNiel, and freshman Caley Napoletano all hit homers for the Cougars in the game. Napoletano’s shot was a grand slam that accounted for 4 of her 6 RBI on the day.

Junior Kaleigh Bodak and sophomore Bella Richwine both had 3 hits for H-K. Sophomore Brooke Hickman and Bodak shared the pitching duties with Hickman getting the win.

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team moved to 9-5 on the season after splitting a pair of games last week.

On May 2, H-K hosted Valley Regional and took a 13-4 loss to the Warriors. Three days later, the Cougars traveled to Clinton to play Morgan and defeated the Huskies by a 17-4 score. Junior Callen Powers pitched 6 innings and struck out 7 to get his third win of the year for H-K. Freshman Todd Butler had 3 doubles, and senior Caden Civiello hit a 2-run homer for the Cougars.

Boys’ Golf

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ golf team moved to 4-2-1 on the year following a split of two recent contests.

On May 4, H-K took a 163-182 road loss to Portland at Portland Golf Course. The following day, the Cougars hosted Old Saybrook at Black Birch Golf Course and defeated the Rams by the score of 185-194.

Senior Andrew Fleig earned medalist honors for H-K by shooting a low score of 40 in the team’s win versus Old Saybrook. Freshman Andrew Crayton shot a 46, senior Gabe Barile finished with a 49, sophomore Declan Kessler shot a 50, and junior Jacob Maier posted a 51 for the Cougars.

Boys’ Tennis

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ tennis team played a road match against Valley Regional on May 5. The Cougars lost to the Warriors by the score of 6-1 and are now 4-7 this year.

Freshman Bryce Leiberman claimed a straight-sets victory for H-K in the No. 2 singles match versus Valley. Leiberman defeated his opponent by the final score of 6-4, 6-4 to account for the Cougars’ point in the contest.

Girls’ Tennis

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ tennis team traveled to Deep River to take on Valley Regional for its lone contest of the week. H-K took a 7-0 defeat the Warriors on May 5 to move to 0-12 on the season.
