East Haven Girls’ Tennis Earns Three Victories; Softball Squad Improves to 6-1

Girls’ Tennis

The East Haven girls’ tennis team had a busy schedule with four matchups on the slate last week. The Yellowjackets came away from the week with three victories to improve their record to 5-3 this season.

East Haven kicked off the week by posting a 7-0 shutout over Platt Tech in a home match on April 19. Senior Diana Vazquez claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 singles match for East Haven. Senior Karlee Lynn won a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles; senior Camryn Lendroth was a 6-4, 6-0 victor at No. 3 singles; and junior Abby Brooks posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 4 singles.

East Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of junior Izabella Olszewski and sophomore Alyson Alberino earned a 6-0, 6-1 win. The No. 2 duo of junior Diya Patel and sophomore Alexis Lamprea netted a 6-2, 6-0 victory; and the No. 3 tandem of senior Christina Vera and sophomore Hailey Ahumada triumphed by a 6-1, 6-3 score.

The following day, the Yellowjackets took a 5-2 road loss to Hamden. Senior Carole Tapia and Patel won a 6-1, 6-2 decision in the No. 2 doubles match. East Haven’s No. 3 doubles team of Vera and Lamprea claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win.

On April 21, East Haven played a road match against Career and won the contest by a 6-1 score. Lynn (6-2, 6-3), Lendroth (6-0, 6-0), and Patel (6-1, 6-0) netted straight-sets victories at the No. 2 through 4 singles spots, respectively, for East Haven. The Yellowjackets’ No. 1 doubles team of Olszewski and Vera notched a 6-0, 6-0 win; the No. 2 team of Ahumada and junior Annora Sayers won a 6-2, 6-0 decision; and the No. 3 team of Lamprea and freshman Brianna Casner earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

The day after that, the Easties hosted Career and earned another 6-1 victory versus the Panthers. Lendroth posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles; and Brooks triumphed by a 6-1, 6-0 final in the No. 3 singles match for the Yellowjackets. East Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of Lynn and Christina Vera claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory; while the No. 2 team of junior Ivonne Vera and junior Julia Nargi won their match by a 6-4, 6-2 score.

Boys’ Tennis

The East Haven boys’ tennis team took defeats in its each of its matches last week and is now 1-7 on the year.

East Haven took a 6-1 home loss to Lyman Hall on April 18. The Yellowjackets’ No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Gustavo Flores-Soto and Mateo Romero claimed a 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 victory for East Haven in the matchup.

On April 20, the Yellowjackets played a road match versus Wilbur Cross and lost by a 7-0 score. The next day, East Haven hosted Hamden and took a 7-0 defeat to the Green Dragons.

Softball

The East Haven softball team hosted Sacred Heart Academy (SHA) for a Saturday afternoon matchup on April 23. The Yellowjackets notched a 4-1 win versus the Sharks at East Haven High School to improve to 6-1 on the year.

Senior Emilee Bishop pitched perfect softball through 5 innings in East Haven’s win against SHA, ultimately pitching a 1-hitter in which she issued no walks and struck out 9. East Haven had 6 hits in the victory, 5 of which were doubles. Junior Lily Gagnon hit 2 doubles, while Bishop, senior Lena Barthel, and sophomore Gianna Fowler had 1 double apiece.

East Haven also went 4-1 in a few exhibition games in Orlando, Florida earlier in the week. The Yellowjackets defeated teams from New Jersey, Michigan, Florida, and Connecticut, while also taking a loss against a team from St. Petersburg that’s the No. 13-ranked squad in Class 6A in Florida.

Baseball

The East Haven baseball team lost three games last week to put its record at 1-7 on the season. The Yellowjackets took losses against Jonathan Law, Shelton, and Hillhouse-Career in last week’s action.

East Haven took a 10-0 defeat versus Jonathan Law in a road game on April 18. Two days later, the Yellowjackets hosted Shelton and lost to the Gaels by a 19-2 final.

East Haven finished its week by taking a 4-3 loss a against Hillhouse-Career in a road game at West Rock Park on April 22. Junior Peyton Torre had 3 hits for the Yellowjackets in the contest.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Branford-East Haven (Bfd-EH) boys’ lacrosse team had three home games on its schedule last week. Bfd-EH claimed victory in two of those matchups to improve its overall record to 3-5 on the season.

On April 18, Bfd-EH posted a 12-1 home victory over Hamden at Branford High School. Three days later, the Hornets hosted Lyman Hall and won the contest by a 16-11 score.

Freshman Gennaro Pompano scored 5 goals to go with 3 assists in Bfd-EH’s win over Lyman Hall. Junior Sean Bosworth also scored 5 goals, senior Alex Milne had 3 goals, and fellow senior Cam Paleski handed out 4 assists. Senior Kevin Lee netted 2 goals for the Hornets, while junior Matt McNulty had a 1 goal with 2 assists. Senior Aidan Strebel made 12 saves to get the win in net.

Then on April 23, Bfd-EH finished its week by taking a 6-5 loss to Sheehan in another home game. Bosworth and Milne both scored 2 goals, while Pompano had 4 assists for Bfd-EH. Lee scored a goal, and McNulty had an assist. Strebel made 20 saves for the Hornets, who saw Paleski collect 10 ground balls in the contest.
