Guilford Boys’ Hoops Goes to 7-0; GNH Warriors Also Stay Undefeated

Boys’ Basketball

The Guilford boys’ basketball team continued its strong start to the season by notching three more victories last week. The Grizzlies now have a record of 7-0 on the year.

Guilford started up its week by claiming a 44-30 road win versus Hamden on Jan. 11. Then on Jan. 13, the Grizzlies hosted Platt Tech and won the game by the final score of 63-23.

Guilford was up 20-2 after the first quarter and held a 34-9 halftime advantage over Platt Tech. The Grizzlies went on to outscore Platt Tech in the third (12-8) and fourth (17-6) quarters to win the game by 40 points.

Junior Justin Hess scored 12 points for Guilford in the victory. Juniors Kevin Goldberg and Josh Violette both scored 7 points for the Grizzlies. Junior Riley Swan, junior Caden Markovich, sophomore Jaden Iannaccone, and sophomore Lucca Rivera added 5 points apiece.

The very next day, Guilford was on the road to face Lyman Hall and won the contest by the score of 49-40. Guilford held a 20-13 lead after one, but Lyman Hall won the second quarter 13-8 to make it 28-26 at halftime. The Grizzlies outscored Lyman Hall 12-4 in the third quarter to take a 40-30 lead into the fourth and went on to get the victory.

Hess scored 16 points for Guilford in the win. Goldberg had nine points, senior captain Cal Bucci scored 10 points, and junior Riley Swan added 8 points.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Guilford boys’ ice hockey squad won one of its three games last week to put its record at 3-5 on the year.

Guilford claimed a 10-1 home win over Southington-Coginchaug-Westbrook at Ralph Walker Ice Arena in New Haven on Jan. 12. Then on Jan. 14, Guilford played a road game versus Hand and dropped a 4-3 decision at Lou Astorino Ice Arena in Hamden. The following day, the Grizzlies hosted Masuk at Bennett Rink in West Haven and took a 4-2 loss.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Guilford girls’ indoor track team sent several athletes to compete in the James Barber Invitational last week. The meet was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 10.

Senior Julia Antony claimed second place (3:11.26) in the 1,000 for Guilford, while junior Ursula Adams finished third (3:13.06) in the 1,000. Junior Olivia Kaisin finished seventh (5:39.35) in the 1,600, and sophomore Clara Gahm took ninth place (5:41.14) for the event. Junior Eliza Hastings came in seventh place for the long jump (12-2).

On Jan. 11, the Grizzlies were represented by a handful of athletes at the SCC Novice Meet. Freshman Inka Muhs turned in Guilford’s top performance by taking seventh place in the 1,600 (6:36.31).

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Guilford boys’ indoor track team saw some athletes compete in a pair of recent meets at Floyd Little Athletic Center.

The Grizzlies took part in the James Barber Invitational on Jan. 10. Senior Justin Shiffrin finished third in the 1,000 (2:44.80) for Guilford at the meet. Also in the 1,000, junior Michael Masotti finished in fifth place (2:45.36), senior Thomas Gregory took sixth place (2:46.97), and junior Bretton Garrick finished in seventh (2:47.60).

Guilford went on to compete in the SCC Novice Meet the following day. Sophomore Mackinley Cho finished fourth in the 1,000 (3:04.49) for the Grizzlies. Junior Zachary Pawelek finished sixth (11:52.23) in the 3,200 with junior Jefferson Guo placing seventh (11:56.50), Cho taking eighth place (12:25.08), and freshman Enzo Taverna coming in ninth place (12:26.11).

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving team continued its winning ways by earning a pair of recent victories. The Warriors claimed home wins over West Haven and Lyman Hall-Coginchaug to improve their record to 4-0 on the campaign.

On Jan. 11, GNH hosted West Haven and claimed a 93-72 victory at Walter Gawrych Community Pool. Guilford senior Finn Henry won the 200 individual medley (2:05.24), and Guilford sophomore William Cong placed first in the 50 freestyle (24.37) for the Warriors. GNH’s 200 medley relay of Henry, Cong, Guilford sophomore Alex Hansen, and Guilford junior Joey Gould also finished in first place (1:52.71).

East Haven freshman Aeden Conners finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:06.21) and the 500 freestyle (5:29.26). East Haven senior Hethon Foster took first place in the 100 butterfly (53.90), while East Haven junior Brendan Conners finished first in the 100 freestyle (50.64). North Haven junior Christian Butler earned top honors in the 1-meter diving (278.30).

Then on Jan. 13, GNH went up against Lyman Hall-Coginchaug for another home meet and triumphed by the score of 98-80. Henry took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:50.38) and the 500 freestyle (4:55.61) for the Warriors. The 200 freestyle relay of Brendan Conners, East Haven senior Pavlo Melnyk, North Haven freshman Kyle Januszewski, and Guilford junior Lucas Espinosa also took first place (1:39.87). Hansen placed first in the 100 butterfly (57.14 for GNH.

Brendan Conners won the 200 IM (2:01.72), and Foster finished first in the 50 freestyle (23.06). Butler earned another first-place finish in the diving (245.45).
