Guilford Girls’ Hoops Scores Win Versus Morgan; Fencing Teams Sweep Invitational Meet

Girls’ Basketball

The Guilford girls’ basketball team split a pair of matchups last week to put its record at 2-1 on the season. On Jan. 5, Guilford was on the road to play Mercy and lost the contest by the score of 49-24. The following day, the Grizzlies hosted Morgan and defeated the Huskies 33-20 to earn their second win of the year.

Senior captain Miabella Diaz scored 17 points for Guilford versus Mercy. Fellow senior captain Faith O’Donnell had 14 points for the Grizzlies when the team defeated Morgan. Diaz had 10 points with five assists to help Guilford win the game.

Guilford was up 5-4 after the first quarter and then outscored Morgan 9-2 in the second quarter to take a 14-6 lead into halftime. The Grizzlies won the third quarter by an 11-6 margin to extend their lead to 25-12 entering the fourth. Guilford held off the Huskies’ comeback bid in the final frame and went on to get the 13-point victory.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Guilford boys’ ice hockey team is sporting a record of 2-3 on the winter campaign. After winning their first two games of the year, the Grizzlies took a 5-1 loss to Trumbull and then dropped a 3-2 decision against Lyman Hall in their two subsequent matchups. Then on Jan. 8, Guilford faced North Branford at Northford Ice Pavilion and lost to the Thunderbirds by a 2-1 score.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Guilford girls’ ice hockey team has seen the last few games on its schedule get postponed. Guilford was slated to face the Fairfield co-op on Dec. 23, but the contest was postponed, as were the team’s subsequent games with the Masuk and Avon co-ops that were scheduled for Jan. 5 and 8, respectively. The Grizzlies have a record of 3-1 on the year.

Wrestling

The Guilford wrestling team is off to a stellar start with a record of 9-2 this winter. The Grizzlies won their first seven contests before coming away with a split of four meets last week.

After defeating Morgan in its season opener, Guilford claimed victories versus New Haven (72-0) and East Haven (60-21) in its next two matchups. Guilford went on to participate in a big meet a Windham High School and defeated every team that it faced at the competition. The Grizzlies scored wins over East Lyme-Norwich (48-33), Windham (48-33), Rockville (64-12), and Bacon Academy (66-12) for a clean sweep on the day.

Then on Jan. 5, Guilford traveled to Milford to take on Foran for a SCC showdown. The Grizzlies lost the Lions by the final score of 40-39 to take their first defeat of the season.

Senior John Fernandes prevailed via pinfall of his 113-pound bout versus Foran. The Grizzlies also received pinfall victories from senior captain Eddie Barlage (160), senior captain Brent Strand (182), and senior captain Christopher Murphy (195), along with freshman Logan Murphy (285). Junior Alejandro Colberg-Martinez won via technical fall in the 170-pound division, while senior Michael Van Keuren won a majority decision in the 220-pound bout.

On Jan. 8, the Grizzlies hosted a meet at Guilford High School and won two of their three matches on the day. Guilford posted victories over Middletown (58-14) and Trumbull (42-37) to go with a loss versus Ledyard (45-36) at the meet.

Guilford received pinfall wins from Fernandes (113), freshman Owen Pelletier-Stephens (120), freshman Elijah McDermott (132), Barlage (160), Colberg-Martinez (170), Strand (182), and Murphy (195) in its victory versus Trumbull.

In the Middletown win, Pelletier-Stephens (126), freshman Rocco Barbera (152), and Barlage (160) all prevailed by pin, while Strand won a majority decision in the 182-pound division.

For the Ledyard match, the Grizzlies saw pinfall victories from senior Ryan Halas (145), Barlage (160), Colberg-Martinez (170), Strand (195), and Murphy (220).

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

The Guilford fencing program turned in a spectacular performance when it competed at the Morgan Invitational on Jan. 8. Guilford’s boys’ and girls’ fencing teams both defeated all three of their opponents on the day as the Grizzlies swept their way through the invitational with an exceptional effort.

The Guilford boys’ fencing team earned wins versus Fairfield (15-6), Morgan (17-10), and Greenwich (16-11) at the Morgan Invitational. The girls’ fencing team also enjoyed an undefeated day by posting victories over Fairfield (20-7), Morgan (21-6), and Greenwich (21-6). Within these results, the girls’ foil team, girls’ saber team, and boys’ épée team each went 3-0 by defeating all three opponents at the meet.

In the girls’ team’s match against Fairfield, the foil and saber teams both won 8-1, while the épée team took a 5-4 loss. Facing Morgan, the girls’ foil squad posted a 9-0 shutout, saber prevailed by a 7-2 score, and épée won a 5-4 decision. In the Greenwich contest, the girls’ épée team recorded an 8-1 victory, the saber team claimed a 7-2 win, and the foil team won by a 6-3 score.

For the boys’ team’s contest versus Fairfield, the épée team claimed an 8-1 victory, the saber squad posted a 3-0 victory, and foil took a 5-4 loss. Taking on Morgan, the boys’ foil team won 8-1, épée triumphed by a 5-4 final, and the saber team took a 5-4 defeat. In the Greenwich matchup, the boys’ épée team notched a 7-2 victory, the saber team won a 6-3 decision, and the foil squad took a 6-3 loss.

Freshman foil fencer Catherine Zhou posted a record of 7-0 for the girls’ team on the day, as did junior saber fencer Joy Qiang. Also for the girls’ team, junior captain Taylor Smith went 8-1 in foil, senior Kit Libby was 7-2 in saber, junior Riley Weed went 7-2 on the épée strip, and senior captain Lucia Rusconi was 6-1 for the saber team.

On the boys’ side, senior captain AJ Raucci went 7-1 in épée, senior David Crair was 6-2 for the épée team, senior Jerry Li notched a mark of 5-2 in saber, sophomore Paul Greenleaf went 5-2 for foil, and senior captain Owen Angkatavanich went 4-2 in saber.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Guilford girls’ indoor track team sent a few athletes to compete at the SCC Developmental meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 4.

Junior Ursula Adams took first place in the 1,600 (5:31.28) for the Grizzlies at the meet. Junior Olivia Kaisen finished fourth (5:41.15) in the 1,600, while sophomore Clara Gahm and senior Julia Antony finished in sixth (5:42.90) and eighth (5:43.03) place, respectively, for the event.

Guilford’s 1,600 sprint medley relay team of freshman Jillian Evans, junior Eliza Hastings, Adams, and Antony finished in third place (4:40.73) at the SCC Developmental meet.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Guilford boys’ indoor track team was represented by some athletes when a SCC Developmental meet took place on Jan. 3. Junior Riley Johnson turned in the Grizzlies’ top showing by finishing in 34th place for the long jump (15-6.25) at the meet.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Greater New Haven (GNH) Warriors boys’ swimming and diving team improved to 2-0 this season by earning a win versus Notre Dame-West Haven last week. On Jan. 4, the Warriors hosted the Green Knights and prevailed by the score of 101-67 at Walter Gawrych Community Pool in North Haven.

Guilford senior Finn Henry swam his way to top honors in the 200 freestyle (1:47.84) and the 100 butterfly (57.95) for GNH in the victory. Guilford junior Aiden Cohen earned first place in the 200 individual medley (2:15.77). Senior Hethon Foster took first place in the 50 freestyle (22.62) and the 500 freestyle (5:07.31). Junior Christian Butler finished first in the 1-meter diving (225.60).

GNH’s 200 medley relay of freshman Kyle Januszewski, Cohen, Guilford junior Lucas Espinosa, and junior Spencer Carroll took first place (1:58.72). The 200 freestyle relay of Carroll, Espinosa, Foster, and Guilford freshman Hugh Henry also finished in first (1:40.97).
