Yellowjackets See Solid Start to Winter Season
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven co-op boys’ ice hockey team played two games during the first week of its season and came away with a pair of victories for a stellar start to the campaign. The Yellowjackets earned a win versus Cheshire and then defeated Staples to open up the season with a record of 2-0. The team features athletes from East Haven, Morgan, Old Saybrook, Valley Regional, Old Lyme, and East Hampton.
On Dec. 13, the East Haven co-op hockey squad opened its season by playing a road game against Cheshire at Lou Astorino Ice Arena in Hamden. The Yellowjackets defeated the Rams by the final score of 9-7 to kick off the year on a triumphant note.
Sophomore Griffin McGlinchey scored two goals to go with two assists for East Haven in the win. Senior captain Parker Sprankle and freshman Gennaro Pompano both had two goals with an assist on the night.
Senior Josh Berg and junior Nicholas Ruggiero each had a goal and an assist for the Yellowjackets. Junior Alan Schroeter and junior Dylan Ingram contributed one assist apiece. Senior goalie Ryan Sheldon made 31 saves in the win.
Then on Dec. 18, East Haven played another road game when it faced Staples at Milford Ice Pavilion. Head Coach Lou Pane’s club notched a 9-2 victory against the Wreckers to cap off a nice first week on the ice.
Boys’ Basketball
The East Haven boys’ basketball team began its first season with new Head Coach Frank Lyon by winning its first two games of the campaign last week. The Yellowjackets posted victories over Career and Wright Tech to jump out to a 2-0 record this year.
East Haven started up its season by notching a 51-40 road victory against Career on Dec. 16. Junior Theo Rawls scored 20 points, and senior Kyle Cusano had 18 points for East Haven in the victory. Freshman Ron Calderon had eight points, and senior Shea Carasone scored six points for the Yellowjackets.
Two days later, the Easties hosted non-conference opponent Wright Tech for their home opener. The Yellowjackets defeated the Warriors by the final score of 71-48 at East Haven High School for their second win on the campaign.
Wrestling
The East Haven wrestling team claimed a victory when the Yellowjackets competed in their first meet in two years last week. On Dec. 15, the Easties faced Shelton on the road for their season opener and routed the Gaels by the score of 78-6.
East Haven won several matches via forfeit on its way to a lopsided win over Shelton, but also scored its fair share of pinfall victories in the matchup. Freshman Alyson Alberino prevailed by pinfall at the 3:47 mark in her debut match in the 120-pound division. Senior Frank Papa was a pinfall winner at the 3:21 mark of his 126-pound contest, while junior Elijah Trufan won his 138-pound match by pin in 1:05.
Freshman Alex Dombrowski made a great debut for the Yellowjackets by winning via pin in 19 seconds at 152 pounds. Sophomore Nick Vance needed just 25 seconds to pin his opponent in the 160-pound division.
