Cook Runs to 2nd for Old Saybrook at States; Field Hockey Loses in Shoreline Semis

Boys’ Cross Country

Sophomore Parker Cook took second place on behalf of the Old Saybrook boys’ cross country squad when the Rams competed at the Class S State Championship last week. Cook’s performance helped Old Saybrook take sixth place with a team score of 161 points at Wickham Park in Manchester on Nov. 1.

Cook finished with a time of 17 minutes and 30 seconds on his way to earning runner-up honors at the Class S meet. Cook only placed behind senior Sean Kennedy-Wonneb of Hale-Ray with his mark of 17:01.

Sophomore Ngwang Choegyal came in 23rd place (19:04) for Old Saybrook in states. Junior Logan Worman finished in 37th place (20:06) for the Rams.

Junior Tyler Milardo-Denler finished in 57th place (20:33), and freshman Everett Miller took 58th place (20:34). Senior Zachary Nichols finished in 62nd place (20:46), while sophomore Gabriel Rutan came in 63rd place (20:46) for Old Saybrook.

A few days after the Class S Championship, Cook represented Old Saybrook at the State Open Championship at Wickham Park on Nov. 5. Cook finished in 86th place by running a time of 17:33 at the State Open.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Old Saybrook girls’ cross country team finished in sixth place at the Class S State Championship at Wickham Park on Nov. 1. The Rams recorded a team score of 157 points on their way to claiming sixth place in states.

Junior Catherine Minegar led the Old Saybrook pack by taking 15th place with a time of 22:16. Sophomore Carlina Castro ran a time of 22:36 to finish in 19th place on behalf of the Rams.

Junior Vicki Carrica finished in 41st place (24:12) for Old Saybrook at the Class S meet. Senior Caitlin Wiley finished in 44th place (24:37), and freshman Catherine Pamment took 54th place (25:23) for the Rams.

Field Hockey

The Old Saybrook field hockey team took a defeat to North Branford in the semifinals of the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. The Rams are competing in the Class S State Tournament this week.

Old Saybrook was the No. 3 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and faced No. 2 North Branford in the semifinals on Nov. 1. The Rams took a 3-1 loss against North Branford, which went on to earn a 2-1 win versus Valley Regional in the championship game.

Old Saybrook is the No. 6 seed in the Class S State Tournament and started off the draw by playing a first-round home game versus No. 11 New Fairfield on Nov. 9 (after press time). With a win, Old Saybrook would face the winner of No. 3 Thomaston and No. 14 Shepaug Valley in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Nov. 11. The semifinals are on Tuesday, Nov. 16 and Wednesday, Nov. 17, and the Class S state final will be held at Wethersfield High School on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Football

The Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football team hosted Pequot Conference opponent Ellington for Saturday afternoon matchup on Nov. 6. The Rams lost the game by the final score of 42-6 at Old Saybrook High School to move to 0-6 on the year.

OS-W is hosting Valley Regional-Old Lyme (2-5) for a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division contest on Saturday, Nov. 13. The game gets underway at 11 a.m. at Old Saybrook High School.

Girls’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook girls’ soccer squad is participating in the Class S State Tournament this week.

As the No. 19 seed, Old Saybrook (6-5-6) began the Class S tourney by facing No. 14 Ellis Tech on the road in the first round on Nov. 8 (after press time). If the Rams won, they played at No. 3 seed St. Bernard for a second-round game on Nov. 10 (after press time). The quarterfinals are on Friday, Nov. 12, the semis take place from Tuesday, Nov. 16 through Thursday, Nov. 18, and the championship game will be at Dillon Stadium in Hartford on either Saturday, Nov. 20 or Sunday, Nov. 21.
