After losing its first game of the season, the North Branford field hockey team bounced back by winning all of its three matchups on last week’s slate. The Thunderbirds posted shutouts over Westbrook-Old Lyme, Watertown, and Amity last week to improve their record to 3-1 on the season.
North Branford kicked off the week by playing a road game versus the Westbrook-Old Lyme co-op squad on Sept. 13. The T-Birds blanked the Knights by the final score of 7-0 at Westbrook High School.
Senior captain Olivia Toto netted four goals during the first half to spur the Thunderbirds to victory. Toto’s sister, sophomore Sophia Toto, scored two goals for North Branford in the win, while senior Mia Oliverio added a goal.
Junior Payton Kamienski had an assist for the T-Birds, as did freshman Alivia Schmidt. Senior goalie Samantha Helwig did not have to face a single shot on her way to getting the shutout in net. Sophomore Lindsey Onofrio helped lead the charge for a strong defensive effort by North Branford in the victory.
Two days later, North Branford hosted Watertown for a non-conference game and triumphed by a 2-0 score. Olivia Toto and Sophia Toto scored the goals for the Thunderbirds in the win. Head Coach Babby Nuhn said that senior captain Braeden LeBeau showed strength in the midfield against Watertown. Nuhn added that sophomore teammates Gianna Gamble and Morgan Lucibello are holding their own on defense for North Branford.
Then on Sept. 18, North Branford traveled to Woodbridge to face Amity for another non-conference contest. The T-Birds notched a 4-0 victory against the Spartans for their third win in as many games on the week.
Girls’ Soccer
The North Branford girls’ soccer team moved to 0-3 this year after losing both of its games on last week’s schedule. The T-Birds took defeats versus East Hampton and Old Saybrook in recent action.
On Sept. 14, the T-Birds hosted East Hampton and took a 9-1 loss at North Branford High School. Then on Sept. 16, North Branford played a home game against Old Saybrook and dropped a 6-0 decision.
Boys’ Soccer
The North Branford boys’ soccer team took two losses last week to move to 0-3 on the season. The Thunderbirds dropped contests against East Hampton and Cromwell in last week’s matchups.
On Sept. 13, North Branford played a road game versus East Hampton and took a 9-0 loss to the Bellringers. Two days later, the T-Birds were back on the road to face Cromwell and lost the contest by a 7-0 score.
