08/23/2021 12:00 AMThe Deep River Horseshoe League (DRHL) wrapped up week 16 action with several teams still vying for the last remaining playoff positions. With only one game remaining in the regular season and the first round of the playoffs beginning Thursday, Aug. 26, it's make or break for several DRHL teams.
The Reds clinched first place for the year top spot in the standings. Reds' Division B player Andy Perna, who lives in Chester, was the top scorer among the B's with with a series mark of 125. The Dodgers held steady in second place scoring a 4-2 decision over the Pirates. The Dodgers Butch Carotenuto of Hamden had the second-best series score among B players with 102. Despite the loss, the Pirates' C Player Sheryl Serviss had another big night with a series score of 122, which was second best among the C's.
The Braves moved into third place after a 5-1 victory against the Orioles, while the Marlins are in fourth place. The Marlins flexed their scoring prowess with Division A player Mark Goodale, who lives in Clinton, leading all A players with a series of 164, and C player Karen Perna, who lives in Chester, at the top of the heap for the C's—and B's for that matter—with a score of 129.
The Yankees hung in fifth place after securing a 3-3 split with the Tigers, who are in seventh place tied with the Angels. The Red Sox and the Angels split their series 3-3, while Angels' A Player Tony Cutone had the third highest series tally among A players with 141. The Red Sox and the Rangers are tied for eighth place in the standings, with the Pirates just half game behind the Red Sox.
The Royals' John Sciacca (Chester) notched the second highest score in the A Division at 144. The White Sox Cody Layton scored 98, which earned third best among B players. Jeremy Davis (Chester) of the Rangers scored the third highest mark among C players with a series of 108.
The Deep River Horse League standings shook out as follows: Reds (67-29), Dodgers (58.5-37.5), Braves (55-41), Marlins (54.5-41.5), Yankees (52-44), Angels (50.5-45.5), Tigers (50.5-45.5), Rangers (50-46), Red Sox (50-46), Pirates (49.5-46.5), Royals (47-49), Cards (46-50), Cubs (46-50), Padres (41-55), White Sox (38.5-57.5), Giants (38.5-57.5), Orioles (35-61), Mets (34.5-61.5).
