H-K’s Track Teams Compete Undefeated Regular Seasons; Baseball and Softball Squads Notch 15th Victories
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ outdoor track and field team concluded its regular season with a record of 5-0 by earning a 126-23 victory against Hale-Ray on May 18. This marks the third-consecutive undefeated season for the Cougars, who have a record of 97-3 in their dual-meet competitions since 2010.
Sophomore Zenon Kolcio took first place in the 110 hurdles (16.7) and 300 hurdles (44.4) in the victory. Junior Kevin Cavrell finished first in the 100 (11.4) and the 200 (23.7) for the Cougars.
H-K also received first-place finishes from senior Max Cozean in the 400 (53.0), senior John Bruder in the shot put (48-5), senior Eamon Sweeney in the discus (126-5), junior Caleb Freeman in the 1,600 (4:54), and senior Matthew Jennings in the 3,200 (9:58). Also finishing first were junior Aidan Law in the long jump (18-5), sophomore Orion Inkel in the triple jump (34-11), and senior Sam Luther in the javelin (146-6).
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The H-K girls’ outdoor track squad notched a 132.5-10.5 win versus Hale-Ray on May 18 to finish its regular season with a mark of 5-0. This is the second-straight campaign in which the Cougars went undefeated.
Senior Kedarjah Lewis finished first in the 100 (12.7) and the long jump (16-9) for H-K. Fellow senior Mai-Ly Criscuolo took first place in the 100 hurdles (17.6) and the 300 hurdles (52.4), while junior Jess Timothy won the high jump (4-8) and the triple jump (29-8).
The Cougars are additionally bolstered by victories from sophomore Isabel Berardino in the 1,600 (5:52), junior Hadley Comerford in the 400 (67.7), junior Ly-Linh Criscuolo for the 200 (28.2), and freshman Sydney Adelberg in the 3,200 (4:02). Also taking first place were Mikaya Laurenza in the shot put (27-5), senior Morgan Schultz in pole vault (8-0), and junior Scarlett Strom in the discus (79-11).
Baseball
The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team won three of its four contests last week to finish with a record of 15-5 in the regular season. The Cougars will open the playoffs by competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week.
On May 17, H-K defeated Old Saybrook by a 4-0 score in a home game. Seniors Luke DiMauro and Alden Halfinger each had two hits and an RBI in the win.
Two days later, the Cougars bested Old Lyme by a 6-5 final on the road. DiMauro and senior Cavin Burrell both had a couple of hits for H-K. Junior Lucas Kamoen had two RBI in the victory.
H-K went on to notch a 5-4 home victory over Ellington on May 21. DiMauro, Burrell, and junior Alex Sheehan all had two hits with an RBI for the Cougars.
The next day, H-K took a 7-1 loss against Windsor. DiMauro had two doubles in the game.
H-K is the No. 2 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and began the draw with a quarterfinal home game versus No. 7 Morgan on May 24 (after press time). With a win, H-K would host the winner of No. 4 Cromwell and No. 5 North Branford in the semifinals on May 25 (after press time). The championship game is at Palmer Field in Middletown at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 28.
Following Shorelines, H-K will compete in the Class M State Tournament that gets underway on Saturday, May 29.
Softball
The H-K softball squad competed its regular season at 15-2 overall after winning two of its three games during the final week of play.
H-K claimed an 8-2 road victory against Old Saybrook on May 17. Freshman Bella Richwine earned the win on the mound for the Cougars. Senior Ella McGlynn hit a home run in the victory.
Two days later, H-K lost to Old Lyme by a 6-1 final.
On May 20, H-K claimed a 1-0, 13-inning win over Cromwell. Richwine struck out 20 batters for the Cougars in the marathon victory. Richwine also scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by junior Madison LaTouche in the top of the 13th inning.
H-K enters the Shoreline Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed and hosted No. 9 Old Saybrook in the quarterfinals on May 24 (after press time). If the Cougars won that game, they hosted the winner of No. 4 Cromwell and No. 5 Lyme-Old Lyme in the semis at 4 p.m. on May 25 (after press time). The Shoreline final is on Thursday, May 27.
After the Shoreline Tournament, the Cougars will be competing in the Class M State Tournament that begins on Saturday, May 29.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The H-K boys’ lacrosse team improved to 11-4 on the year after winning three of its four games last week. The Cougars, who have one regular-season game remaining, have qualified for the Class S State Tournament.
H-K netted a 16-3 win over Old Saybrook on May 18 and then took an 18-8 loss to Trumbull the following day. The Cougars went on to get a 17-1 win versus Cromwell on May 20 and a 14-3 victory against Old Lyme on May 22.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The H-K girls’ lacrosse team lost three of its four games during the past week to finish its campaign with a record of 4-10.
On May 17, the Cougars dropped a road 19-10 road contest against Valley Regional 19-10. The next day, they lost at Old Saybrook by a 17-8 score. H-K went on to claim a 16-7 home win against Cromwell on May 20. Two days later, H-K took a 12-3 loss to Old Lyme.
Boys’ Tennis
The H-K boys’ tennis team won two out of its three contests last week to finish with a mark of 6-11 on the season.
On May 17, H-K hosted Old Saybrook and defeated the Rams by a 5-2 score. The next day, H-K traveled to Portland and notched a 5-2 win over the Highlanders. The Cougars finished their week by taking a 5-2 road loss to Morgan on May 19.
Girls’ Tennis
The H-K girls’ tennis team competed its regular season at 7-10 after taking three defeats during the final week of play. The Cougars are playing in the Class M State Tournament that begins on Friday, May 28.
The Cougars took a 4-3 defeat at Old Saybrook on May 17. H-K went on to take back-to-back 5-2 home losses against Portland and Morgan on May 18 and 19, respectively.
Boys’ Golf
The H-K boys’ golf took three defeats during last week’s action.
The Cougars lost to Coginchaug by a 170-196 score in a home match at Black Birch Golf Club on May 17. The following day, H-K took a 181-207 road loss to Cromwell at TPC River Highlands. In its last match of the week, H-K dropped a 180-205 decision versus Morgan at Black Birch.
