The Guilford softball team had one of the best weeks of its season by securing victories in three of its four contests last week. The Grizzlies now have an overall record of 7-9 on the campaign.
On May 10, Guilford played a road game against Hand and notched a 7-6 victory. Senior Jill Batick went 3-for-3 with a double, and fellow senior Carissa Ross was 3-for-4 with a double for the Grizzlies. Freshman Addison Smith went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and two RBI. Senior Ema Signore pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.
The following day, Guilford hosted Hillhouse and earned a 22-0 win in five innings. Freshmen Anna Fagan and Adrianna Piascik combined to throw no-hitter for Guilford, striking out nine batters in the game.
On May 12, Guilford took its only loss of the week with a 4-2 defeat to Sacred Heart Academy. Ross and Fagan both had a double, while junior Allie Petonito added a pair of hits.
To finish the week, the Grizzlies hosted Jonathan Law and won a 3-1 decision on May 14. Petonito hit a two-run home run and also had a triple in the victory.
Baseball
The Guilford baseball team took three defeats last week to move to 2-14 this season.
On May 11, the Grizzlies took a 4-3 road loss to Foran. Senior Sam Huffman went 2-for-3 with a double for Guilford.
Two days later, Guilford played a road game versus Shelton and lost by a 12-1 score. In their final game of the week, the Grizzlies were back on the road to face Notre Dame-West Haven and took a 6-1 defeat.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Guilford girls’ lacrosse team improved its record to 12-2 after winning all three of its games during the past week. The Grizzlies notched lopsided victories versus Branford, Cheshire, and Old Lyme in recent action.
On May 11, Guilford traveled to Branford and defeated the Hornets by the final score of 17-3. Freshman Payton Root scored four goals for Guilford. Senior Hannah Tillier and junior Maddie Epke each had three goals. Junior Taylor Farace and senior Sydney Cunningham both scored two goals, while senior Ella Kagan and junior Lorelei King added one goal apiece. Senior goalkeeper Sydney Widlitz stopped four shots in the win.
Three days later, the Grizzlies claimed a 17-3 win against Cheshire. Root and Farace scored six and four goals, respectively, in the victory. Epke had three goals, while sophomore Kat Baseggio, Tillier, Cunningham, and King all scored one goal. Widlitz made nine saves in goal.
Guilford ended the week with an 11-0 home victory against Old Lyme on May 15. Cunningham netted three goals for the Grizzlies. Kagan and Tillier both chipped in with a pair of goals. Widlitz stopped five shots to get another win in net.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Guilford boys’ lacrosse team lost three out of its four games last week to drop to 3-10 on the season.
On May 10, the Grizzlies hosted Fairfield Prep and lost by a 17-3 score. Two days later, the Grizzlies picked up an 11-3 road victory against North Haven.
On May 13, Guilford lost a tight 11-10 contest at Xavier. The Grizzlies went on to take a 15-3 loss to Wilton on May 15.
Girls’ Tennis
The Guilford girls’ tennis team won two of its last three matches and is now sporting a record of 9-5.
On May 10, Guilford hosted North Haven and claimed a 4-3 victory. Freshman Molly Peterson and senior Emma Mullet both won their respective singles matches by the final score of 6-2, 6-0. The Grizzles’ doubles duo of freshman Kallie Kagan and senior captain Kiera Stankewich prevailed by a 6-0, 6-1 final, while the team of senior Claire Pringle and freshman Alexie Gipson earned a 7-6, 7-5 victory.
Two days later, Guilford hosted Cheshire and netted a 6-1 win. In singles play, senior Hannah Dietzko won a 6-1, 6-0 decision; sophomore Riley Mullett notched a 6-2, 6-0 victory; senior Emma Mullett won her match by a 6-2, 6-0 score; and freshman Molly Peterson posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. The doubles team of Kagan and Stankewich won a 7-6, 6-3 decision. The tandem of senior Veronica Zimmer and freshman Kendall Mulligan recorded a 6-4, 7-6 victory.
In its last match of the week, Guilford took a 6-1 loss at Amity on May 14. Peterson earned the Grizzlies’ victory by winning a 6-0, 6-3 decision on the singles court.
Boys’ Golf
The Guilford boys’ golf team split four matches last week to put its record at 5-7 on the year.
On May 10, Guilford took a 139-173 loss to Hand at Madison Country Club. Junior Miguel Pearce turned in the low score for the Grizzlies with a 40. Senior Peter Keanna (41), senior Shane Markle (46), and senior Shea Thibault (46) rounded out the scoring on the day.
The next day, Guilford defeated Hamden by the final score of 176-196 at Laurel View Country Club. Pearce scored a 42 on the round and was followed by Keanna (44), junior Owen Angkatavanich (45), and Markle (45).
On May 12, Guilford posted a 178-193 victory against East Haven at Madison Country Club. Guilford was back on that same course the following day and dropped a 152-175 decision against Hand.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team took a 94-56 home loss to Jonathan Law in its last meet of the regular season on May 11. The Grizzlies posted a record of 3-2 on the year.
Senior Julia Antony claimed first place in the 800 (2:21.7) and the 3,200 (13:10.5) for the Grizzlies. Fellow senior Zoe McClure finished first in the triple jump (31-10) and the high jump (4-10). Sophomore Ursula Adams won the 1,600 (5:35.3) for Guilford.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Guilford boys’ outdoor track team hosted Jonathan Law on May 11 and took a 92-53 defeat to finish the regular season with a record of 0-5.
Junior Justin Shiffrin took place in the 1,600 (4:43.2) for Guilford at the meet. Sophomore Michael Masotti won the 3,200 (10:12.17), while senior Reese Puchalski finished first for the 800 (2:03.2). Junior Ian Rose won the shot put (40-9.5), and freshman Andres Guiterrez earned top honors in the triple jump (37-10).
Guilford’s 4x400 relay of senior Caleb Harris, junior Thomas Gregory, Puchalski, and Shiffrin finished first with a time of 3:39.6. The 4x800 relay of freshman Mackinley Cho, Gregory, Masotti, and Shiffrin recorded a time of 8:40.5 to take first place.
