H-K’s Track and Field Teams Keep Winning; Boys’ Lacrosse Also Stays Undefeated
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ outdoor track and field team hosted Valley Regional last week and came away with a 132-13 victory on May 4. The Cougars improved their record to 3-0 with the win.
Senior Matt Jennings broke the school record in the 800 while winning the event with a time of 1:56.8 for H-K. Jennings bested the previous record of 1:58.46 that had been set by Jake Corbett in 2006.
Senior Eamon Sweeney claimed first place in the 110 hurdles (15.1), the 300 hurdles (42.1), and the high jump (5-6) for the Cougars. Senior John Bruder finished first for both the shot put (51-11) and the discus (128-8).
H-K also received victories from senior Jonathon Chute in the pole vault (9-0), junior Evan Baird in the 3,200 (10:54), junior Caleb Freeman in the 1,600 (4:49), sophomore Julian Houde in the 400 (62.2), senior John Kowal in the 200 (24.0), junior Aidan Law in the long jump (18-7), and senior John Bosco in the javelin (141-3) in its win versus Valley.
The Cougars’ 4x800 relay of sophomore Alex Lara, Baird, senior Ethan Chester, and Jennings claimed first place. The 4x400 relay of senior Max Cozean, Freeman, Lara, and Jennings also finished in first.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The H-K girls’ outdoor track squad is now 3-0 on the year following its 124-14 victory versus Valley Regional on May 4.
Senior Kedarjah Lewis had another huge meet for the Cougars by notching first-place finishes in the 100 (12.5), the 200 (26.8), the long jump (17-5), and the triple jump (33-3). Senior Mai-Ly Criscuolo won the 100 hurdles (17.7) and 300 hurdles (51.2), while sophomore Izzy Berardino took first in the 1,600 (5:41) and the 3,200 (12:42),
Also finishing first for H-K were sophomore Leah Chester in the high jump (4-6), senior Mikaya Laurenza in the shot put (26-9), senior Gabby Lester in the discus (88-4), junior Scarlett Strom in the javelin (77-9), senior Morgan Schultz in the pole vault (7-6), and junior Brianna Minervino in the 800 (2:42).
Boys’ Lacrosse
The H-K boys’ lacrosse squad stayed undefeated by winning all three of its contests in last week’s action. The Cougars improved to 7-0 with their recent victories versus Old Lyme, Morgan, and Valley Regional.
H-K started off its week by earning a 12-5 road win over Old Lyme on May 4. Two days later, the Cougars were on the road to face Morgan and prevailed by an 11-6 score. Then on May 8, H-K hosted Valley Regional and notched a 10-8 victory versus the Warriors.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The H-K girls’ lacrosse team played three games last week and notched one win to move to 2-6 on the season.
On May 4, H-K took an 11-9 loss to Old Lyme. Then on May 6, H-K defeated Morgan by the final score of 13-11. The following day, H-K played Mercy and dropped a 14-10 decision.
Softball
The Haddam-Killingworth softball team took its first defeat of the season last week and also claimed a victory to put its record at 10-1.
On May 3, H-K hosted Old Saybrook and won the contest by the final score of 5-1. Freshman Bella Richwine had two hits with two runs scored for the Cougars. Junior Audrey Snyder and freshman Ivy McNiel each had an RBI single. Senior Ella McGlynn went 3-for-3 on the day.
On May 7, H-K hosted North Branford and dropped a 12-7 decision for its first loss on the year.
Girls’ Tennis
The H-K girls’ tennis squad stands at 5-6 after gaining a split of last week’s matchups.
On May 4, H-K hosted to North Branford and won the contest by a 5-2 score. Four days later, the Cougars took a 7-0 loss against Old Lyme.
Boys’ Tennis
The H-K boys’ tennis team moved to 3-8 this season after taking two recent defeats.
On May 3, the Cougars took a 7-0 loss to Westbrook in a road match. Four days later, H-K played Old Lyme and lost the matchup by a 5-1 final.
Boys’ Golf
The H-K boys’ golf team lost both of its contests last week and is now 0-6 this year.
On May 3, the Cougars traveled to Indian Springs Golf Course and lost to North Branford by the final of 194-224. Junior Andrew Fleig shot a score 44 of H-K. Freshman Declan Kessler (52), junior Gabe Barile (54), and freshman Owen Staskelanas (74) also competed for the Cougars.
Three days later, H-K hosted Portland at Black Birch Golf Course and took a 167-213 defeat. Barile posted the top score for the Cougars with a 48. Barile was followed by Kessler (50), Fleig (52), and freshman Bryce O’Linn (63) on the scoreboard.
