Morgan Girls’ Hoops Notches Pair of Victories; Gymnastics Drops Contest to Valley

Girls’ Basketball

The Morgan girls’ basketball squad was scheduled to play two games this week, and the Huskies secured wins in both contests. Morgan matched up against Coginchaug and Westbrook, and with victories in each game, the Huskies’ record improved to 8-2 on the season.

On March 8, Morgan headed to Durham to take on Coginchaug, and the Huskies claimed a 44-42 win in overtime over the Blue Devils.

Morgan fell behind 11-4 in the first quarter, but the Huskies battled back with a 12-6 effort in the second to trail by just a single tally, 17-16, at the half. Morgan came out strong in the third, posting a 20-12 advantage in the frame, but the Blue Devils were able to draw back to a tie with a stunning 8-1 edge in the fourth quarter. With the score tied 37-37 after regulation, the game went to overtime, where the Huskies outscored Coginchaug 7-5 en route to the 44-42 victory.

Senior captain Catie Donadio led the Huskies with 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds, three steals, two assists, and a block. Sophomore Caeley Ayer added 13 points, five steals, two rebounds, two assists, and a block, while senior Alex Kelly provided six points, eight boards, six blocks, an assist, and a steal. Sophomore Katie Martin supplied six points, four rebounds, and two steals. Freshman Ava Johnson hauled in four rebounds to go with two steals, while fellow freshman Victoria O’Neill had three rebounds and two blocks. Sofie Passante grabbed four boards.

Three days later, the Huskies earned a 62-27 road win over Westbrook.

Morgan got out to a hefty 28-6 lead after the first quarter and added to that lead with an 18-6 second quarter for a 46-12 advantage at halftime. The Huskies added to the edge with an 8-5 third quarter, and Westbrook closed the gap slightly by outscoring the Huskies 10-8 in the final frame. Morgan claimed the 62-27 victory at the final horn.

Ayer had a huge night with 30 points, and Donadio provided 12 points in the winning effort. Johnson (9), Passante (5), Martin (4), and O’Neill (2) all supplied points in the victory.

Gymnastics

The Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Hale-Ray gymnastics squad had a competition against Valley Regional last week. The team lost its matchup against Valley Regional by the score of 124.45-122.85 at Flip-Flop Gymnastics on March 13. H-K/Morgan/Hale-Ray now has a record of 4-1 on the year.
