The Hand girls’ basketball team continued its strong start to the winter season by recording a pair of home victories last week. The Tigers improved to 3-0 after defeating both East Haven and Hillhouse in convincing fashion during recent action.
On Feb. 16, Hand hosted East Haven and defeated the Yellowjackets by a 63-30 score. The Tigers were down 16-13 after the first quarter, but outscored East Haven in the second (20-6), third (18-5), and fourth (12-3) quarters to come away with the win.
Junior Sophia Coppola had 17 points for Hand in the victory. Sophomore Natalie Lucas scored 12 points, and senior Hadley Houghton had 10 points. Junior Brooke Salutari and sophomore Coco Rourke netted seven points apiece, while senior Maddie Thomas added five points for the Tigers.
Four days later, Hand played a home game versus Hillhouse and prevailed by a 52-30 score. The Tigers held a 24-19 halftime advantage and then broke open the game by outpacing the Academics in both the third (16-8) and fourth (12-3) quarters.
Coppola and Salutari both scored 13 points for Hand in this contest. Lucas had 10 points, Houghton scored seven, and Rourke had five points in the win.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand-Coginchaug-Valley-Old Lyme (H-C-V-OL) girls’ ice hockey team lost two of its three games last week and is now 2-2 on the year.
H-C-V-OL squared off against Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Lauralton-Shelton-New Milford for a road game at the Sports Center of Connecticut on Feb. 17. H-C-V-OL won the game by a 3-0 score for its second victory of the season.
On Feb. 20, H-C-V-OL took a 7-0 loss to West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy at Bennett Rink. The next day, the team lost to Guilford by an 8-1 score at Northford Ice Pavilion.
Gymnastics
The Hand gymnastics team competed by itself in a pair of meets last week.
The Tigers posted a score of 130.2 points when they participated in their opening meet of the season on Feb. 15. Junior Paige Dean posted an all-around score of 33.2 points for Hand. Freshman Hadley Reiss finished with an all-around total of 32.7.
Hand competed in another solo meet on Feb. 20 and tallied an overall team score of 131.5. Reiss scored an all-around total of 33.9, and Dean finished with a 33.8 for the all-around.
Girls’ Fencing
The Hand girls’ fencing team improved to 3-0 on the year with 15-12 victory at Guilford on Feb. 20.
The Tigers’ foil team triumphed in convincing fashion by earning a 7-2 win versus Guilford. Senior captain Cameryn Brown won all of her matches to improve her record to 8-0 this season.
The épée team posted a 6-3 victory, led by senior captain Sophie Glassman, who went undefeated to run her record to 6-0 this year.
The sabre team took a 7-2 loss against Guilford in the matchup.
Boys’ Fencing
The Tigers’ boys’ fencing squad took its first defeat of the season with it dropped a 16-11 decision in Guilford on Feb. 20.
Hand’s foil team prevailed by a 5-4 score versus the Grizzlies. Fede Barrera and Red Sullivan notched two wins apiece for the Tigers.
Hand’s sabre team took a 5-4 loss against Guilford. The Tigers’ épée squad lost by a 7-2 score.
