Guilford Field Hockey Takes SCC Opener; Several Teams Win Regular-Season Finales

The Guilford field hockey squad won its last two games of the regular season and then claimed victory in its opening game of the SCC Division A Tournament last week. Head Coach Kitty Palmer’s team has an overall record of 11-1-0-1 on the year.
Guilford netted a 9-0 shutout over Sheehan in a home game on Nov. 4. The very next day, Guilford hosted Daniel Hand and defeated the Tigers by a 3-1 score in its regular-season finale.
Then on Nov. 7, Guilford opened play in the SCC Division A Tournament as the No. 2 seed by hosting No. 7 Lyman Hall for a first-round game at Kavanaugh Field. Guilford blanked Lyman Hall 7-0 to advance into the semifinal round.
Senors Izzy Gurnham, Hannah Tillier, Ella Kagan, Kelly Calistro, and Kathryn Amatruda all scored goals for Guilford during the week, as did sophomore MJ Santa Barbara and freshman Payton Root.
Guilford was scheduled to play No. 3 seed Daniel Hand in the semis of the SCC Division A Tournament on Nov. 9 (after press time). If Guilford won, it would have faced the winner of Cheshire and Branford for the title on Nov. 11 (after press time).
Girls’ Volleyball
The Guilford girls’ volleyball team finished its regular season with a record of 12-0 after posting 3-0 victories over both East Haven and Branford in a pair of home matches last week.
Guilford swept East Haven by a 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-19) score on Nov. 2. Senior Emma Appleman had nine kills with one ace, while fellow senior Juliet Young posted five digs and two assists for Guilford. Senior Olivia Ciocca contributed 21 assists in the win.
Three days later, Guilford hosted Branford and blanked the Hornets by a 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-11) final. Appleman had 15 digs and 10 digs, Young finished with nine digs and four assists, and Ciocca had 18 assists in the triumphant effort.
Guilford is scheduled to compete in the SCC Division C Tournament this week. Top-seeded Guilford (10-0) was slated to play a semifinal match on Nov. 11 (after press time) and, with a win, would move on to the final on Friday, Nov. 13.
Girls’ Soccer
The Guilford girls’ soccer squad notched a win and a tie during last week of the regular season to finish with a mark of 6-1-3.
Guilford played East Haven to a 1-1 tie in an away game on Nov. 2. Sophomore Arianna Tomassi scored Guilford’s goal in the victory.
On Nov. 6, Guilford hosted Branford for its regular-season finale and claimed a 1-0 win over the Hornets at Kavanaugh Field. Sophia Gabriel netted the lone goal of the game on an assist from fellow senior Moira Kellaher.
Guilford has earned the No. 1 seed in the SCC Division B Tournament. Guilford played a semifinal game on Nov. 11 (after press time) and would advance to the championship on Friday, Nov. 13 with a victory.
Boys’ Soccer
The Guilford boys’ soccer team finished its regular season with a record of 6-2-1 after winning its final game of the slate last week. On Nov. 3, Guilford played a road game against East Haven and defeated the Yellowjackets by a 6-1 score.
Guilford is the No. 2 seed in the SCC Division B Tournament and was scheduled to play No. 3 East Haven in the semifinals on Nov. 10 (after press time). With a win, Guilford would advance to face top-seeded Daniel Hand for the championship on Thursday, Nov. 12.
