Hand Girls’ Swimming Defeats Branford in Virtual Meet; Field Hockey Notches Two Victories
Girls' Swimming and Diving
The Hand girls' swimming and diving team took on Branford in a virtual meet last week. The Tigers defeated the Hornets by the final score of 77-76 at the meet.
Branford and Hand competed separately at the Madison Racquet & Swim Club on Oct. 5. Hand's athletes were to first to compete, after which the Hornets athletes' hit the water to turn in their performances. The two teams' performances in each event were then compared to one another in order to score the meet.
In the end, Hand claimed a 77-76 victory versus Branford, although the meet that was not as close as the final score indicated. Hand jumped out to a sizable lead over Branford early in the meet, and so the second half of the meet was contested on an exhibition basis, meaning the Tigers were unable to score any more points regardless of their performances.
Senior captain Ava Keane delivered first-place showings in the 50 freestyle (26.28) and the 100 freestyle for the Tigers (57.51), swimming state-qualifying times in both events. Hand also received first-place finishes from its 200 medley relay team of Keane, senior Ava Dougherty, senior captain Emma Ruffo, and sophomore Julia Urbowicz (2:06.75); its 200 freestyle relay featuring junior Kacie Wines, Dougherty, freshman Molly Hoban, and freshman Norah Stotz (2:00.56); and its 400 freestyle relay of Urbowicz, Wines, Ruffo, and Keane (4:04.36).
The Tigers were additionally bolstered by victories from Keane in the 50 freestyle (26.28) and the 100 freestyle (57.51), Wines in the 200 freestyle (2:10.50), Urbowicz in the 100 butterfly (1:07.75), junior Abbigail Chemacki in the 500 freestyle (5:47.39), and Dougherty in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.84).
Field Hockey
The Hand field hockey squad notched a pair of recent victories to raise its record to 3-0 on the season. The Tigers defeated Branford and Sheehan in last week's action.
On Oct. 5, the Tigers hosted Branford and prevailed by a 3-1 final at Daniel Hand High School. Three days later, Hand faced Sheehan for another home game and claimed a 4-2 victory over the Titans.
Boys' Soccer
Hand squared off against Guilford for the second time in as many games on the young 2020 season. The Tigers earned their second victory versus Guilford with a 6-1 win at Kavanaugh Field on Oct. 9. Hand now stands with a record of 2-0 on the year.
Senior captain Chris Porte scored two goals for the Tigers in their win versus Guilford. Senior keeper Eli Davies earned the win in goal.
Girls' Cross Country
The Tigers improved to 4-0 this season by sweeping a tri-meet in Hamden last week.
Hand competed against Hamden and Cheshire at Hamden Middle School on Oct. 7. The Tigers posted a pair of victories by earning a 21-36 win versus Hamden and a 25-31 victory over Cheshire at the meet.
Girls' Volleyball
The Tigers stand at 1-4 on the season through the first two weeks of play. After taking defeats in its first three matches, Hand bounced back by earning a win versus Whitney Tech, then took lost a contest to Branford.
Hand dropped a 3-0 contest at Guilford in its season opener on Oct. 2. The following day, the Tigers hosted Hamden and lost by a 3-0 score.
On Oct. 5, the Tigers took a 3-0 defeat to East Haven in a home match. Then on Oct. 8, Hand notched its first win of the campaign with a 3-0 road victory versus Whitney Tech. The day after that, Hand took a 3-1 loss at Branford.
