Junior Matt Jennings raced his way to a third-place finish in the 1,000-meter run when he represented Haddam-Killingworth at the New England Indoor Track Championships last week. The meet took place at the Reggie Lewis State Track Athletic Center in Roxbury, Massachusetts on Feb. 29.
Jennings posted a time of 2:28.80 to claim third place in the 1,000 at the regional meet. Jennings’s time was less than a second off the pace of the first-place finisher Rhys Hammond of Stonington, who recorded a mark of 2:28.12.
Girls’ Indoor Track
Junior Kedarjah Lewis competed in two events for the Cougars at last weekend’s New England Championship meet.
Lewis ran a time of 7.48 seconds to come in 13th place for the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash at New Englands. She also recorded a leap of 16 feet-6.5 inches to finish in 15th place for the long jump.
Boys’ Wrestling
The Cougars finished in 11th place by scoring 53 points at the State Open Championship last week. Junior Thomas Perry led H-K by earning a third-place finish at the Open, which took place at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 28 and 29.
Perry entered the State Open on the heels of placing first in the 285-pound division at the Class S State Championship. He started off his State Open run by earning a pinfall victory, then lost on a pinfall in his next contest.
Perry went to the consolation bracket, where he claimed four victories to take third place. Perry won a 6-3 decision and a 12-1 majority decision to advance to the consolation semis, where he prevailed via pinfall. In the third-place bout, Perry won a 3-1 decision over Jordan Agosto of Danbury. Perry will compete at the New England Championship in Methuen, Massachusetts this weekend.
Junior Cameron Hines finished sixth in the 106-pound division. Hines won his first match by a 4-1 decision and then took a 5-0 loss. In the consolation bracket, Hines won a 6-0 decision and a 4-1 decision before taking a 4-1 loss in the semis. Hines went to the fifth-place bout, where he lost a 13-4 majority decision.
Sophomore Ben Williams advanced to the quarterfinals of the 138-pound bracket after winning a 14-2 majority decision and a 10-8 decision in his first two matches. After losing a 2-0 decision in the quarters, Williams went to the consolation bracket, where he lost a 10-4 decision.
Sophomore Nicholas Glynn earned a pinfall victory in his opening bout at 152 pounds. Glynn lost a 10-2 majority decision in his next bout and then lost on a pinfall in the consolation rounds.
Junior Matthew Carson took an 8-4 loss in his 182-pound opener. Carson came back by winning a 10-3 decision and a 12-10 decision in the consolation rounds before taking a 3-0 defeat.
In the 113-pound weight class, sophomore Ethan Wright claimed a 2-0 victory in his first matchup. Wright lost a 2-0 decision in his next bout and then won a 6-2 decision in his first consolation contest. Wright took a 9-1 loss in his next match.
Sophomore Samuel Young lost a 12-9 decision in his first matchup for the 145-pound division. In the consolation bracket, Young earned a 10-3 victory and then took a 12-5 defeat.
Sophomore Ryan Duncanson competed in the 170-pound weight class for the Cougars. Duncanson lost a 15-2 majority decision in his first match and then took a 9-2 defeat in his first consolation bout.
Girls’ Wrestling
H-K sophomore Sofia Guarino earned a fifth-place finish at the inaugural Girls’ Wrestling Invitational last weekend. Guarino took fifth place in the 132-pound division while representing the Cougars at the tournament, which was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 28 and 29.
Guarino started off by winning a 13-7 decision in her first matchup and then won a 5-0 decision in the quarterfinal round. Guarino took a 7-0 defeat in the semifinals to go to the consolation bracket, where she lost a 2-0 decision. Then in the fifth-place bout, Guarino earned a 7-0 decision victory against Ashley Wood of New Fairfield.
Boys’ Basketball
The Cougars split a pair of games during the last week of the regular season and then took a first-round loss in the Shoreline Conference Tournament. H-K has an overall record of 8-12 as it gets ready to compete in the Division III State Tournament this week.
On Feb. 25, H-K defeated Westbrook by a 77-53 final at home. Then on Feb. 27, the Cougars dropped a 63-53 decision at East Hampton in their regular-season finale.
Two days later, H-K opened the Shoreline Conference Tournament as the No. 7 seed and took a 58-47 defeat at No. 2 seed Valley Regional.
Girls’ Basketball
H-K opens play in the Class M State Tournament as the No. 31 seed this week. The Cougars, who have an overall record of 6-14, are traveling to No. 2 seed Canton for a first-round game on Monday, March 2 at 6 p.m.
With a win, H-K would play the winner of No. 15 Windham and No. 18 O’Brien Tech in the second round Thursday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m. The quarterfinals are on Monday, March 9 at 7 p.m.; the semifinals take place on Friday, March 13; and the Class M state final will be held at Mohegan Sun Arena on either Saturday, March 21 or Sunday, March 22.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The Lyman Hall/H-K/Coginchaug (LH/H-K/C) boys’ ice hockey came away from the final week of its regular season with a win and a loss. The Trojans went 10-9-1 for regular-season play this year.
On Feb. 24, LH/H-K/C bested Immaculate by a 4-3 score in overtime at Northford Ice Pavillion. Then on Feb. 29, the Trojans took a 4-3 loss versus Wethersfield-Middletown-Rocky Hill-Plainville at Newington Ice Arena.
LH/H-K/C is playing in the Division II State Tournament that begins with first-round action on Monday, March 9.
