Printer Friendly Version - Guilford Boys’ Hoops Earns Win Versus Career; Track Teams Score Points at SCCs

The Guilford boys’ basketball gained a split of two games last week to put its record at 7-7 on the season.

Guilford took a 73-42 defeat at Hillhouse on Feb. 3. Senior Chris Cahill scored 13 points, while fellow senior John Petonito had 12 points for the Indians.

Then on Feb. 7, Guilford hosted Career for an SCC Quinnipiac Division matchup. The Indians earned a 58-54 victory versus the Panthers to improve to 4-1 in divisional play on the year. Cahill scored 20 points for Guilford in the victory. Petonito scored 12 points, while senior Brayden Santa Barbara contributed 13 points for Guilford.

Guilford claimed victory in two its three games last week to improve to 5-11 entering the last week of the regular season. The Indians posted lopsided wins over Career and Law before losing to Mercy in their recent matchups.

On Feb. 3, Guilford hosted Career and prevailed by the final score of 47-17. Two days later, the Indians hosted Law and notched a 41-21 victory at Guilford High School. Then on Feb. 7, Guilford took a 40-23 road loss against divisional opponent Mercy to move to 2-4 in the SCC Housatonic Division.

Guilford came away with a split while playing a pair of SCC opponents last week. The Indians have an overall record of 8-4 and are 5-3 in conference play this winter.

On Feb. 6, the Indians took a 4-2 home loss to Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law-Foran/Weston/Pomperaug at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink. Two days later, Guilford faced off with Branford-North Haven-East Haven at that same site and triumphed by a 4-2 final.

Guilford was on the road to face Xavier for an SCC Division I contest on Feb. 5. The Indians took a 64-9 defeat against the Falcons to drop to 16-3 on the year.

The Indians were represented by several runners in the distance events at last week’s SCC Championship. Guilford finished in 10th place as a team by scoring 19 points at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 7.

Sophomore Julia Antony turned in the Indians’ top showing by taking second place in the 3,200-meter run at SCCs. Antony crossed the finish line with a time of 11:53.40 to earn runner-up honors for Guilford. Senior Clara Wiesler finished third for the 3,200 with a time of 12:00.38. Senior Katrina Muhs finished sixth (12:26.72), freshman Clara Laughlin took seventh (12:37.07), and sophomore Olivia Skapczynski came in 13th place (12:51.52).

Skapczynski also finished fourth in the 1,600-meter run by crossing the finish line in a time of 5:35.17. Freshman Olivia Kaisen placed 16th in the event at 6:25.98. Fellow freshman Ursula Adams was eighth for the 600-meter run with a mark of 1:50.04.

Guilford sent a handful of athletes to compete at the SCC Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 7. The Indians scored three points and came in 15th place at the meet.

Sophomore Justin Shiffrin finished fifth in the 1,600-meter run by posting a time of 4:47.62 for the Indians. Senior McKendry Eschinger was right behind Shiffrin by claiming sixth place at 4:47.64. Eschinger was coming off of his victory in the 1,600 at the SCC East Sectional Championship during the previous week. Senior Griffin Hughes finished 14th (4:58.38) for the 1,600, while fellow senior Ben Crair placed 19th (5:04.84) in the event at SCCs.

Shiffrin also took eighth place in the 3,200 with a time of 10:22.54 for the Indians. Junior Tanner Updyke finished in 15th place at 10:54.35. Sophomore Thomas Gregory finished ninth (2:50.38) in the 1,000-meter run, and senior Cameron Hubbard finished 11th (2:51.78) for the event.

The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving squad posted a pair of divisional wins by defeating Hamden and West Haven-Platt Tech in last week’s action. The Warriors improved to 5-2 overall with a record of 3-0 in SCC Division II with the victories.

On Feb. 4, GNH hosted Hamden and prevailed by a 94-80 score at Walter Gawrych Community Pool. Three days later, the Indians claimed a 90-82 road victory against West Haven-Platt Tech at West Haven High School.

Several athletes turned in lifetime-best and season-best performances for the Warriors during last week’s meets. Freshman Joey Gould turned in a lifetime-best in the 500 freestyle (5:39.49) to go with season-best swims in the 50 freestyle (26.67) and 200 freestyle (2:11.23). Sophomore Kyle Borrelli swam a lifetime-best of 56.46 in the 100 freestyle and finished the 50 freestyle with a season-best mark of 25.31. Freshman Aiden Cohen recorded a lifetime best in the 500 freestyle (5:15.77) and a season best for the 100 butterfly (1:01.21) for GNH. Junior Daniel Kamen swam a lifetime-best time in the 100 butterfly (1:07.40), while junior Ray Lewis did the same in the 100 freestyle (1:08.08).

The following athletes recorded season-best times for the Warriors last week: junior Alan Penna in the 100 freestyle (58.61) and 200 freestyle (2:09.65), freshman RT Trotter in the 200 individual medley (2:16.48) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.03), freshman Spencer Carroll for the 100 butterfly (1:05.29) and 100 backstroke (1:04.36), junior David Zhang in the 100 freestyle (57.43), and freshman Lucas Espinosa in the 100 freestyle (59.78).

Also swimming season-best ti mes were sophomore Hethon Foster in the 500 freestyle (5:09.62) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.15), senior Aidan Henry in the 500 freestyle (4:48.42), sophomore Finn Henry in the 500 freestyle (4:48.47), and senior Tanner Powell in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.26).
