The Westbrook boys’ basketball team dropped a pair of games on last week’s slate. The losses dropped the Knights’ record to 4-6 on the season.
On Jan. 20, Westbrook faced off with East Hampton and lost a 65-47 road contest against the Bellringers.
On Jan. 24, the Knights went up against Morgan at home, and Westbrook were plaing from behind early after the Huskies got out to a four-point lead after a 10-6 first quarter. Morgan extended that edge with a 14-10 second quarter to put the score at 24-16 at halftime. The Knights went on a tear offensively in the third quarter outscoring the Morgan 21-11 and taking a two-point lead after three. The Huskies battled back in the fourth, outscoring the Knights 19-11 to reach the 54-48 final score.
Westbrook saw another big game from Jack Naccarato who had a game-high 25 points on the night. Brenden Engles supplied eight points, while Joe Caslin added five points in the losing effort. Brendon Naccarato also provided five points. The second quarter was a similar story with Morgan outscoring Hale-Ray 17-4. The Huskies allowed just 10 first-half points and held a 38-10 going into the break. Morgan increased the lead modestly in the second half outscoring Hale-Ray 29-22 between the two quarters.
Girls’ Basketball
The Westbrook girls’ basketball team had a tough week with two losses on the slate. The Knights’ overall record dropped to 3-10 on the year as a result of the defeats.
On Jan. 21, Westbrook hosted East Hampton and lost a 52-25 home game against the Bellringers. Three days later, the Knights headed to Clinton to take on Morgan, where they lost a 49-27 contest to the Huskies.
Girls’ Indoor Track
The Westbrook girls’ indoor track team had a couple of meets last week and saw some of its athletes earn some strong finishes.
On Jan. 20, the Knights competed at the Freshmen/Sophomore Invite at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. There freshman Mackenzie True placed third in the freshman class in the long jump with a state meet qualifying leap of 14 feet-8 inches. Fellow freshman Halley Pierson placed seventh in the freshman group with a personal best jump of 12’10”.
On Jan. 24, Westbrook competed at the Haddam-Killingworth Invitational, which was also held at the Floyd Little Athletic Center. Junior Elizabeth Gallagher finished third in the Shoreline, 12th overall in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.93 seconds. Junior Brooke Neri finished sixth in the Shoreline and 18th overall in the 1,000 with a time of 3:38. The 4x200 quartet ofDelaney Belcourt, Halley Pierson, Mackenzie True, and junior Elizabeth Gallagher finished fourth in the shoreline and 13th overall with a time of 2:02.
Boys’ Indoor Track
At the Freshman/Sophomore Invite held at the Floyd Little Athletic Center, the Knights saw freshman Hever Gomez take the gold in the 55-meter hurdles in just his second time competing in the event with a Shoreline Championship Meet qualifying time of 10.82 seconds.
On Jan. 24, Westbrook competed at the Haddam-Killingworth Invitational. Gomez competed in the 55 hurdles again, finishing in ninth in the shoreline, and 27th overall with a new personal record time of 10.5 seconds. Sophomore Greg Araya finished eighth in the Shoreline and 18th overall in the 3,200 with a time of 12:06 in his first foray in the event. Sophomore Cooper Whitehouse finished seventh in the shoreline, 24th overall in the 1,000 with a new personal best time of 3:04.
Zach True finished 11th in the Shoreline and 32nd overall in the 300-meter dash with a Shoreline qualifying time of 42.77.
The 4x200 relay of Michael Valiante, John Grace, Carlos Espinoza, and Cooper Whitehouse finished eighth in the shoreline, 23rd overall, with a time of 1:53.
