The East Haven girls’ indoor track squad competed at the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) Coaches Invitational at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 18. Several competitors turned in some respectable finishes for the Yellowjackets in the meet.
Junior Kisha Francois came in second place in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet-1.5 inches to finish behind Sacred Heart Academy’s Bianca Kave’s first place mark of 17 feet-8.25 inches. Francois also earned a ninth place finish in the 55-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 7.74 seconds, and fellow junior Samantha Franceschi’s time of 8.03 seconds put her in 19th place in the 55 preliminaries.
Sophomore Emily Mazzucco leaped to a 15th place finish in the high jump with a height of 4-6. Freshman Jessica Urban cleared the high jump bar at 4-6 as well and finished 17th, and she also placed 14th in the 55 hurdles preliminaries with a time of 10.27 seconds. Sophomore Julia Espinoza came in 27th place in the 1,600 with a time of 6:23.55.
Boys’ Indoor Track
The Yellowjackets’ boys’ indoor track squad competed in the SCC Developmental Meet No. 2 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 14.
Senior Ian Loehmann had some of East Haven’s top finishes. Loehmann came in fourth place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.62 seconds, and he also claimed a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet-11 inches. Loehmann also came in 14th place in the high jump, clearing 5 feet-4 inches.
Also competing in the 55 hurdles was junior Radames Figueroa, who took 13th place with a time of 9.03 seconds. Junior Dhruv Patel clocked in a 10.46 for 29th place in the hurdles, as well.
East Haven’s 1,600 sprint medley relay quartet of senior Mike Castellano, senior Andrew Jimenez, junior Kevin Francois, and senior Abeed Ahmed took ninth place with a time of 4:20.95.
Ahmed earned a 16th place finish in the pole vault with a height of 7 feet-6 inches. Figueroa came in 22nd place in long jump with a distance of 17 feet-8.5 inches.
Castellano earned 23rd place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.12 seconds, and fellow senior Dante Sigular came in 32nd place at a mark of 7.19 seconds. Junior Frank Piscitelli finished 40th with a time of 7.25.
Piscitelli also took 28th place in the 300 with a time of 41.32 seconds, while Sigular came in 37th with a time of 42.10 seconds. Figueroa’s time of 42.72 earned him 41st place.
Girls’ basketball
The Yellowjackets’ girls’ basketball squad had three games on the slate last week and won two of them. With these results, East Haven’s record moved to 6-5 thus far on the season.
On Jan. 13, the Easties hosted North Haven and secured a comfortable 52-36 win against the Indians. Two days later, the Yellowjackets dropped a close 48-46 home contest against Jonathan Law. Then on Jan. 17, Hamden was in town and East Haven scored a 49-42 victory against the Green Dragons.
Boys’ Basketball
The East Haven boys’ basketball team played three road games last week and came away with two victories to move to 3-6 on the season. East Haven defeated Platt Tech and Branford to go with a loss against Notre Dame-West Haven in recent action.
East Haven started off its week by taking an 80-40 road loss to Notre Dame-West Haven on Jan. 13. Two days later, the Yellowjackets prevailed by the final score of 58-32 in a non-conference game at Platt Tech. Then on Jan. 17, East Haven claimed a 51-47 overtime victory in a matchup at Branford.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-Morgan-Valley Regional-East Hampton boys’ ice hockey team was scheduled to play a couple of home games last week, but both games were postponed. With their record of 3-4, the Yellowjackets will return to the ice when they play games against Hall-Southington and Milford this week.
The Easties’ scheduled game versus Woodstock Academy was postponed from Jan. 15 to Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 5:25 p.m. Their matchup with Guilford that was slated for Jan. 18 will now take place at 4:15 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24. Both games will still be played at Patsy DiLungo Ice Rink.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Branford-North Branford-East Haven (B-NB-EH) girls’ ice hockey team took two defeats while playing a pair of road games last week. The Wings now have a record of 2-8-1 on the year.
The Wings started off last week by taking a 6-3 defeat to Hamden-Wilbur Cross-Lyman Hall at Lou Astorino Ice Arena on Jan. 15. The next day, B-NB-EH dropped a 6-2 decision against West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy at Bennett Rink.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Greater New Haven Warriors (GNH) boys’ swimming and diving team earned a huge win by posting a 96-89 road victory against Amity at the High Plains Community Center on Jan. 14. GNH took first place in all but two events in its win versus Amity. The Warriors secured the victory by winning the 400 freestyle relay in the final event of the meet.
Sophomore Kyle Borrelli recorded a lifetime-best time of 1:16.16 in the 100 breaststroke and also swam a season-best time of 25.83 in the 50 freestyle for GNH versus Amity. Junior Ahmed Anwar swam a lifetime best of 34.22 in the 50 freestyle and did a season best 1:17.18 in the 100 freestyle.
Cameron Cargan turned in a season best of 23.59 in the 50 freestyle with fellow junior Tanner Powell swimming a season-best time of 24.48. Also recording season-best times for the Warriors were senior Stephen Borrelli in the 500 freestyle (5:54.08), junior Alan Penna in the 200 freestyle (2:10.30), freshman Patrick Cucchiarelli in the 200 freestyle (2:17.05) and the 100 butterfly (1:12.14), freshman Lucas Espinosa in the 200 individual medley (2:23.64), freshman Aiden Cohen in the 50 freestyle (24.68), freshman Joey Gould in the 500 freestyle (5:44.71), and freshman RT Trotter in the 100 backstroke (1:17.46).
