Yellowjackets’ Football Shuts Out Stratford; Girls’ Swimming Gets First Victory

The East Haven football team rebounded from its first loss of the season by notching a shutout victory over Stratford last week. The Yellowjackets went on the road and defeated Stratford by the final score of 20-0 in a non-conference game on Oct. 25.
East Haven and Stratford played a scoreless first quarter before the Yellowjackets broke through in the second quarter. Junior quarterback Trey Garea connected with senior receiver Kaymond Quattlebaum for a 59-yard touchdown pass to put the Yellowjackets up 6-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, junior Eric Araujo punched home a 3-yard TD run and then ran in the 2-point try to give East Haven a 14-0 lead. Senior Jacob Araujo sprinted for a 12-yard touchdown rush in the fourth quarter to extend the Yellowjackets’ advantage to 20-0.
For the game, Garea was 4-of-7 passing for 97 yards and a touchdown for East Haven. Junior Alex Duarte led the Easties on the ground with 43 rushing yards, Jacob Araujo ran for 42 yards, senior Mike Castellano had 36 yards, Eric Araujo rushed for 14 yards, and junior Dave Amatruda had 10 yards.
Defensively, the Yellowjackets played an outstanding game by forcing Stratford into committing five turnovers. Senior Mike Caruso reeled in three interceptions to go with a fumble recovery, while Amatruda also recovered a fumble in the victory.
The Yellowjackets are currently in the No. 8 spot for the Class M State Playoff rankings in which the top eight squads qualify. East Haven will return home for a Friday night showdown against SCC foe Cheshire (5-1) at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The East Haven-Wilbur Cross co-op squad earned its first win of the year with a 93-90 victory over Sacred Heart Academy on Oct. 24. The win improved the Yellowjackets’ record to 1-9 entering the last week of the regular season.
East Haven prevailed in a close meet that came down to the final event in the 400 freestyle relay. Head Coach Leanne Boisvert said that the Yellowjackets pushed themselves in every event, leading to seven season-best times in relay events, as well as 16 personal records for individual events.
Junior JJ Kim set a personal-best time in the 200 individual medley by finishing at 2:17.26. Freshman Abby Brooks continued to drop her time in the 500 freestyle, placing third at the meet with a 6:33.27. Sophomore Camryn Lendroth finished fourth in the 500 freestyle with a personal-record mark of 7:09.79.
Boys’ Cross Country
East Haven saw three members of its team compete at the Class MM State Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 26. Junior Ian Reynolds posted the Yellowjackets’ best result by finishing 124th with a time of 20:41. Junior Jeff Maffeo finished in 154th place (23:09), while junior Andrew Voira came in 160th place (23:48).
Girls’ Cross Country
The Easties sent a pair of runners to the Class MM State Championship at Wickham Park last weekend.
Sophomore Juliana Espinoza finished in 56th place with a time of 23:56 for East Haven. Junior Erin Currin crossed the finish line in 27:45 to come in in 115th place.
Volleyball
The Yellowjackets lost two of their three matches last week to move to 9-7 on the year, but their one victory solidified a division title for the team.
East Haven started its week by taking a 3-0 loss at Amity on Oct. 21. Two days later, the Yellowjackets dropped a 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20) decision versus Woodland. East Haven finished its week by netting a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-16) victory over Lauralton Hall to clinch the SCC Quinnipiac Division title with a record of 7-0 in divisional action.
In the victory, senior Eliza Goldberg led the Yellowjackets with 10 kills, while senior captain Samantha Schlottman had five kills and senior Alexia Dottori added three kills. Fellow senior Bella Ragaini contributed 30 assists for the Easties.
Boys’ Soccer
East Haven lost three contests last week and is now 1-13 this season. The Yellowjackets took a 6-0 loss to Sheehan on Oct. 21, dropped a 7-0 decision against Xavier on Oct. 23, and were then edged out by Lyman Hall by a 4-3 score on Oct. 25.
Facing Lyman Hall, East Haven allowed the first four goals of the game in the opening 20 minutes, but battled back to make things interesting, and maintained possession in the Trojans’ end for most of the second half. Freshman Christofher Torres scored East Haven’s first goal on an assist from junior Junnyor Torres. Senior Telmo Romero scored the second goal from senior captain Alejandro Sanchez, after which Romero set up sophomore Anthony Sawicki for the Yellowjackets’ third goal of the game.
